Wellness has quietly moved into a majority of the briefs our in-house design team receive. Over the past year, more of our clients have asked us to bring the recovery ritual home - infrared saunas, steam rooms, and now the piece that completes it.

The work we value most takes shape in partnership - with the design studios who know precisely what a space can become. The Apsley Project, a Regency house in the Surrey countryside, reimagined the principal bathroom as a quiet retreat: a freestanding bath drawn up to a full-height window, the Surrey Hills framed beyond it through a new extension. A restrained palette of marble and wood-effect herringbone holds the room still, and lets the view do the rest.

A common mistake is choosing brassware the way you’d choose jewellery - as an accent against everything else.

In a well-designed bathroom, the tap does more than finish the basin. Its finish, proportions and weight either hold the room together or quietly undermine it. A wall-mounted lever reads one way against fluted marble, another against plain stone. The same piece in brushed brass and polished brass isn’t the same piece at all.

Brassware isn’t the last decision in the bathroom. It’s one of the first.

The en-suite bathroom earns its place in the hierarchy of a home not by size, but by intention.

The most considered ones share something - they don’t begin at the bathroom door, they begin in the bedroom. In the choice of a door handle, a threshold material, the way the light travels from one room into the next. The en-suite is a continuation of a thought, not the end of one.

What these spaces understand is that luxury, at its most refined, is never decorative for its own sake. It’s the result of knowing precisely what to include and what to leave out. Fluted brass, aged marble, a vanity that borrows from the language of a chest of drawers, a slatted screen that adds a bit of drama. Each decision made not to impress, but to belong.

The bathroom you reach for last thing at night and first thing in the morning deserves that level of care.

Small bathroom = big potential.

When space is limited, layout matters just as much as finishes. Getting the flow right, whether that’s a walk-in shower in place of a bath, wall-hung fittings to keep sightlines open, or zoning the space so it feels intentional rather than squeezed, makes all the difference.

Add mirrored cabinetry to amplify light, built-in storage to keep surfaces clear, and a tight material palette to avoid visual noise. In compact bathrooms, restraint is often the most luxurious move.

Proof that thoughtful planning, smart layouts and well-shaped details can turn even the smallest bathroom into something that feels calm, functional and beautifully resolved.
