🧡 Beautiful French Rococo Style Fan/Display Stand, circa 1850
❓ Very finely carved with the typical rococo ornaments, including rocailles. Still with the original gilding with beautiful old patination.
❓ You can place a fan between the two glass sheets so you can see both sides of the fan, without touching it. Overall in very good used strong condition, with beautiful original old patination, no missing pieces.
❓ In the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution enabled the mass production of paper and printed fans. By the 19th century, this mass production devalued standard hand fans, prompting art circles and prestigious fan-makers (like Duvelleroy and Alexandre) in London and Paris to organize exhibitions that elevated masterfully crafted fans as fine art. To showcase these masterpieces in polite society, ornate display stands emerged.
❓ Throughout the 19th century, hand fans served as essential tools for social expression. Popularized by marketing campaigns and the Victorian obsession with secret codes, the “Language of the Fan” transformed fans into captivating conversational pieces. Displaying a fan in a prominent stand on a mantelpiece could signify a lady’s romantic conquests, allegiance to certain cultural trends, or personal memories.
❓ As travel increased, fans evolved into popular keepsakes. Wealthy tourists on the Grand Tour and visitors to international exhibitions frequently purchased unmounted fan leaves or beautifully decorated folding fans as mementos. Displaying these pieces on dedicated stands allowed owners to share their travels and cultural sophistication with visiting guests.
