😁 It's National Smile Day! 😁

One of the things I love most about what I do is creating products that make people smile... or, in some cases, snort tea out of their nose. ☕😂

I've never been one for following the crowd. If everyone else is heading in one direction, you'll usually find me wandering off somewhere else with an idea that popped into my head at 2am.

I love creating things that people look at and instantly think, "That's so me!" Whether it's cheeky, quirky, sarcastic, sentimental, or just a little bit bonkers, I want my products to have personality.

Life's serious enough. Sometimes all you need is a notebook that makes you laugh, a keyring that sums up your mood, or a gift that has someone saying, "Where on earth did you find that?!"

If something I've made has ever made you smile, laugh, or do an undignified tea snort, then my job is done. ❤️

🛳️🦆 Did you guess correctly from yesterday's work-in-progress video?

A few of you were close, but here is the reveal...

I'm working on a brand-new range of cruise ducks and cruise-themed goodies! 🚢

If you're a seasoned cruiser, you'll probably know all about the fun tradition of hiding little ducks around cruise ships for other passengers to find. It's a simple idea that's brought smiles to thousands of people sailing the seas.

So I thought... why stop at ordinary ducks? 😏

These little sailors are the first of many cruise-inspired designs that will be joining the collection. Perfect for hiding, swapping, gifting, or keeping for yourself as a reminder of your favourite adventures at sea.

⚓ Are you a cruise duck hider? 🌊 Have you ever found one on a cruise? 🦆 And most
importantly... where are you sailing to next?

What’s under my machine today then? 👀🧵

Wellllll… I’m not giving too much away just yet, but let’s just say a brand new range is quietly waddling its way into Bold In Threads 🦆⚓

These little beauties are being stitched ready for something fun, quirky and a bit different… and I have a feeling some of you are going to become slightly obsessed with them 👀

For now though, you’ll have to keep guessing while I sit here surrounded by thread trims, tea and chaos as usual.

Any guesses what they might be? 😏

Believe me when I say… fabric colour can completely change the final outcome 👀🧵

Both of these patches were stitched using the exact same design, same threads, same machine settings… but look at the difference the twill colour makes to the finished look.

The white twill makes the colours pop and gives a much brighter, cleaner finish.

The black twill creates a bolder, grey look, with a totally different vibe.

This is why I always test stitch and why choosing the right base fabric matters just as much as the thread itself. Tiny details can completely change the personality of a patch ✨

I always stitch my patches onto twill because it gives a lovely clean finish and holds up brilliantly, but even twill has its little plot twists depending on the colour 😅🪡

The power of a recommendation right there 👏🧵

Lovely Helen spotted someone in her local Facebook group looking for custom patches and recommended my little business… and voilà, an order for 3 custom patches landed in my inbox! 🐾✨

People often don’t realise just how important recommendations are for small businesses. We don’t have giant advertising budgets or flashy marketing teams lurking in the background fuelled by overpriced coffee ☕💸

Most of us grow through word of mouth, shares, tags, and lovely customers shouting about us to friends, family, workmates and local groups.

Every recommendation helps keep small businesses visible in the wild jungle that is social media 🌿📱

So if you’ve ever tagged a small business, shared a post, recommended someone in a local group, or told a friend about a maker you love… trust me, it matters more than you know ❤️

And Helen… thank you. You’re an absolute star 🌟

There’s just something ridiculously satisfying about a satin stitch 😍

Smooth. Neat. Shiny. Tiny little rows of thread behaving themselves for once 😆

Satin stitch is what gives embroidery those clean, bold edges and gorgeous filled details. It might look simple, but getting it looking smooth and balanced takes the right settings, stabiliser, tension… and occasionally a small sacrifice to the embroidery gods 🙃

This is the kind of detail that turns embroidery from “nice” into 👌✨

Warning: Watching embroidery reels may result in people becoming weirdly hypnotised by thread.

Bank Holiday mode: activated. ☀️🍹

This little ginger has officially clocked out, slapped on the sunglasses, and decided productivity can wait until Tuesday.

No orders. No stress. No responsibilities.
Just sunshine, snacks, and vibes hotter than the machine after a 40,000 stitch design. 😎

Hope you’re all soaking up the gorgeous weather, eating something naughty, and pretending the washing basket doesn’t exist for at least 24 hours.

Slap on the SPF , stay slightly feral, and enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend! 💕

Sunday mode activated. 🌿📖🍫

The man slave is currently snoring his way through post night-shift recovery while I’m planning a much quieter rebellion… and possibly demolishing some Cornish raspberry dark chocolate in the process.

The book is by local author Nicky Osborne which makes it even better, and the chocolate is proper Cornish too, so today’s theme appears to be “support local while avoiding responsibilities.”

Honestly sounds like the perfect Sunday to me.

Finishing the week with my final workwear order for now 👕✨

10 embroidered t-shirts completed for repeat local customer Aqua Care Wet Rooms.

There’s something really lovely about customers coming back again and trusting me with their branding. Small businesses supporting small businesses will always mean a lot 🖤

Simple, clean embroidery that looks professional, lasts wash after wash, and won’t start peeling off halfway through a job like some printed logos 👀

Now it’s time for me to switch the machine off, grab a tea, and pretend I’m not already mentally planning next week’s orders. 😂☕

People often only see the finished embroidery and think it magically appeared fully formed ✨🪡

What they don’t see is the testing stage.

Every single design I create gets test stitched on the SAME type of fabric it will eventually be stitched onto for customers.

Different fabrics behave differently under a machine. What stitches beautifully on a stabilised cotton square can suddenly pull, pucker or sink into a t-shirt, hoodie or towel.

That’s why I keep a pile of old t-shirts specifically for test stitching logos and designs like this one I’m currently playing with 👕✂️

Testing lets me check: • stitch density
• pull compensation
• thread colours
• placement
• puckering
• how the fabric reacts overall

Sometimes a design looks perfect on screen but turns into an absolute gremlin once the needle gets involved 😅

I’d much rather find those issues on one of my old tees than on a customer order. It’s all part of making sure the finished result looks as good in real life as it does in my head.
