We have a new venture on our farm, run by the amazing Cat Hilder.
Please like the page and tell your friends about it.
This is not a farm park, it's a real working farm with children's activity day's.
We also do free educational visits for local schools.

Young Explorers is a CEVAS accredited children's activity club based at Grange Farm.

This week with very mixed emotions, we watched the last tanker collection of milk going up our drive and waved goodbye to cows going to live in Somerset.

After almost 29 years we are no longer dairy farmers.

We will still have Beef cattle so it won't be quiet here and we have lots of projects to keep us busy.

We would like to thank everyone we have met and has helped us along on our journey as first generation farmers.
We will really miss all our friends within OMSCO who we have been supplying organic milk to for the last 25 years.

We do have lots to look forward to in the future, especially spending precious time visiting family and friends.

Merry Christmas everyone and watch out in 2024 we may come visit some of you.

Just because we are not selling milk via Bumpkin at the moment it doesn't mean we have our feet up by the fire drinking tea.
Here is our first Agroforestry field kindly planted by over 30 volunteers at the weekend.
We have planted apple trees in rows so that we can grow crops or graze the cow's between the rows.
This means we have two crops in the field, a massive increase in the biodiversity and organic apple's In a couple of years.
The snow does a beautiful job of showing off the rows of trees.

To all our lovely customers.

We have come to the very sad decision to close Bumkin Dairy and the milk shed.
With increasing costs and time pressures it's now time to call it a day.

In anticipation of a low milk price for our wholesale milk, we looked for an alternative income stream and applied for funding for two research projects based on the farm.

We were very lucky and have been successful with both of our bids.

The first project is in collaboration with Nottingham University and will be growing organic protein crops and the second project is with Nottingham Trent University and is an investigation into materials that currently go into landfill that could be used as bedding for our cows during the winter.

These projects will enable us to keep our small herd of cow's.

We do hope to restart the milk selling at some point in the future when the economic climate is in a better position and when we have found somebody who wants to take the business on and develop it. Please contact us if you are interested in making cheese, yoghurt, kafir or just selling milk.

Our last day of sales will be Tuesday the 14th of February.

We were a bit worried about this little one as it stayed on the yard while Tom drove the tractor about.
We guess it was just having a rest while it gets used to flying.
It's flown off now 😀

It's time for mowing forage for silage again.

We grow several different plants for feeding during the winter.
The first picture is Lucerne also known as alfalfa. This is a legume with deep roots that thrives when the weather is dry.
The second picture is red clover, another legume that fixes nitrogen from the air, this grows best in the autumn.
The third picture is white clover with grass, this is another legume though with not such deep roots. This has struggled with the recent dry weather, hence it has flowered and the flowers are dying back now.
The grass we grow with the clover does not like it too dry and has 'gone to head' (has produced a seed head). Grass grows early in the spring and grows well when we have wet summers.

Growing several different plants helps us ensure we have good forage no matter what the weather does.

So sorry we ran out of milk at Kegworth today, I had completely underestimated how much milk we would sell.
It's refilled now and back working.

Could the person who paid and didn't get milk please contact me and I will drop some milk round.
