A sealed jazz LP can fetch ten times what an ungraded copy of the same record goes for.

Mint versus VG+ isn't a matter of taste. It's a documented gap that doubles or triples a record's value on the secondary market.

The label fills in the rest. Verve, from 1956 onwards, built on landmark sessions. Provenance lives on the inner ring, not the sleeve.

And sealed means sealed. Original factory shrink, never opened, the vinyl untouched by dust or handling since it left the plant.

Three details, then: grade, label, seal. We pulled them apart on the counter using Julius Rodriguez, Let Sound Tell All, 2022 on Verve, as the working example.

Nine angles before we even thought about breaking the seal.

Jerry Leger, Time Out for Tomorrow. A 2019 Canadian folk rock import, still wrapped in factory shrink since it left the pressing plant.

The cardboard sleeve has its corners intact. You can read the label through the cellophane, 33 RPM, black wax untouched in the groove. The kind of copy you turn over in the light a few times before deciding whether it ever gets a first spin.

Leger writes in the lineage of Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley. Properly meant it, too. One for the folk crowd who like their records lived-in lyrically but pristine in the hand.

Jerry Leger's Time Out for Tomorrow is the kind of folk-rock record that turns a Sunday afternoon into a long drive with the windows cracked open.

Babe's Volery Flighty is riding sh***un tonight. Fresh sleeve, cover art still crisp, tucked under the arm like a secret she's not quite ready to share with the room.

Some records are made for quiet Sunday spins, needle down, coffee going cold, nowhere to be. Others come with you. Pressed against your ribs on the bus, propped on the passenger seat, waiting for whatever the evening turns into.

Tilt the record toward the window. Watch how the label catches the light.

That little ritual tells you more than any grading sticker ever will. Even on a sealed copy, your eyes can do most of the work before the shrink ever comes off.

Case in point: this Julius Rodriguez "Let Sound Tell All" (Verve, 2022), still sealed and sitting on the counter. Here's what we look for through the wrap:

→ a crisp, centred label with no scuffs or spindle marks
→ clean deadwax with no haze on the vinyl through the shrink
→ square corners, tight seams, no ringwear on the sleeve

Mint means mint. A careful buyer always checks, and a good shop never minds you taking your time at the window. 🎷

Is there a better sound than slicing through the original shrink wrap on a factory-sealed indie pressing? We'd argue not.

For collectors, 'New Sealed' is the gold standard. A perfect time capsule of untouched heavyweight wax, pristine sleeve artwork, and crisp labels that have never met a dusty spindle.

Case in point: this copy of Famy's 'We Fam Econo' on Transgressive Records. Still fully sealed in its black vinyl sleeve, bonus 7 inch single tucked safely inside. Finding indie gems with the original shrink intact means you are the very first person to drop the needle into those clean, unplayed grooves 🎶

Sealed since 2014. Not anymore.

This copy of Babe's Volery Flighty on Moshi Moshi sat in its shrink wrap for over a decade before it landed on our counter this afternoon. We held off as long as we could.

There's a small ritual every collector knows. That first fingernail catch on the plastic edge, the slow peel, the smell of a sleeve that's been waiting years to breathe. Nothing quite like it.

The record itself is a hazy, jangly little gem. A quiet keeper of an album that slipped under a lot of radars when it first came out, and one we've always had a soft spot for. If you missed it the first time around, this is your reminder.

Sealed copies are getting genuinely hard to track down now. We had to share before this one made its way to the turntable 🎶
