A story behind the address: During World War I, the Canadian Expeditionary Force included specialized anti-aircraft units, most notably the E (Canadian) Anti-Aircraft Battery, which was broken down into individual mobile sections (such as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Canadian Anti-Aircraft Sections) operating on the Western Front.

Lt McRuer was commissioned in 1916 having already served with the Canadian Field Artillery. He served in France to 1917 when he was severely wounded in an accident whilst commanding troops burying a rotting mule, other soldiers were killed in this accident. He returned to Canada and died in 1920 at the age of 30 years.

What was the RAF Pool in Durban South Africa?. Established in 1941 it managed the pay, administration, equipment, and ultimate deployment or repatriation of sick, injured, or transient RAF personnel sent to South Africa from overseas commands. Finding covers from the 'Pool' is not easy, finding a cachet and two of the rare censor cachets (2-3 known) is at another level. Now for sale, great postal history.

Malta Siege Mail - Malta was under siege for much of 1940 until 1943, and most RAF mail which came out did not use the
normal postal services. It seems to have been carried to the UK by whatever (service) means were convenient
at any particular time and then received either London Official Paid or Received From HM Ships marks. Censorship in the RAF 1918 to 1956 by Colley and Garrard provides a superb reference. Check out www.militarymail.co.uk for Malta covers.

It is rare for me to come across WW1 commonwealth Army or Field Post Office cancellations that I have not seen, after 45 years as a dealer. But here is a new one for me. Army Post office S.W.Z.2 located with the New Zealand Stationary APO at Rouen from early 1918 through to early 1919.

New Stock - During WW2 owing to the shortage in military 'Honour' envelopes, a certificate or label was brought into use, with the requirement for this to be fixed to the lower left of a normal envelope and be signed by the censor. These typically show Unit censor cachets, but were rarely opened by the censors.

All postal history has a story to tell, some of normal arrangements, some of exceptional arrangements to deliver the post in both peacetime and at war. But some postal history tells a great story and allows the owner to have a piece of history in their collection. This simple POW postcard asking for a pay statement was sent by Cpl William Day No. 187599 a Royal Engineer https://www.commandoveterans.org/operation_chariot serving with the Royal Marine Commandoes, captured and taken POW during Operation Chariot, the Combined Operations Raid at St Nazaire. https://www.combinedops.com/St%20Nazaire.htm
