This year, Fuego is celebrating 40 years as a shop at 5a Coombe Street, Lyme Regis DT73PY.

Founded by Ayvin Rogers and Donna Wixted, Fuego started importing handcrafts and clothing from Mexico and Guatemala in 1985. In 1986 they opened a small shop in Ayvin’s family house. Success led to shop space expansion, keeping many living-room features built by Ayvin’s father, including the unique HiFi speaker wall that contributes to the sound quality of music played while customers browse.

Fuego traded at dozens of summer music festivals around the UK and Europe until the late 1990s, employing many locals and introducing them to festival life. They have stories to tell! A decade of annual Fuego Fiesta street parties with bands and DJs made more community memories.

Donna left Fuego as a partner in 1990 but continues to contribute to Fuego’s stock selection and display style, and manages the shop while Ayvin travels in Latin America. The combination of Donna’s contemporary homeware, jewellery and clothing choices and Ayvin’s ethnic and folk art finds in Latin America gives a unique feel to the shop. Children love it, with so many pocket money items to choose from and parents often comment that it was their favourite shop as a child. As a destination shop, Fuego is also known for its humorous greeting cards range, with laughter often heard around the displays.

Ayvin said, “Fuego has been a rewarding lifestyle business, with opportunities to meet so many people in the shop, at festivals and buying overseas! It has been a pleasure to live, work and contribute to the Lyme Regis community over the years and I would like to thank all our customers, staff and suppliers for their longstanding support and good wishes.”

Fuego is open daily, 10am – 5pm.
