Legal fear obeys to avoid punishment. It is not the same as gospel fear.

Tom Hicks describes legal fear as doing right only because you do not want the consequences of doing wrong, changing course to dodge God's punishment rather than out of love.

He adds a sharp observation for our churches: legalists often fear the displeasure of other people just as much as the displeasure of God, sometimes more, which shows the fear was never really about holiness in the first place.

Bunyan wrote most of his theological and pastoral work in prison. A Baptist nonconformist, jailed for preaching, he worked out his doctrine and ideas about pastoral care from a prison cell.
