Alice's Notes for October ✨
🌱 After you finish weeding, give the bare soil a mulch. Doing this while it is still warm locks in the heat, giving herbaceous perennials a thick blanket for the frosts to come! Covering bare soil also helps prevent soil erosion from the rain and suppresses weeds.
🧡 Autumn planting! If you haven't already, now is the time to get your annual autumn bedding in the ground or in troughs. Try and do this before the temperature falls so the roots have a chance to establish.
I will also be lifting the canna tubers this month, drying them off and storing them ready to reuse for next summer.
🌷 Plant spring flowering bulbs that you have been storing. Now is the time that I like to plant the daffodils that I picked up from the bulb shop last month into pots. I usually use a lasagne planting method which involves using a range of bulbs that flower at different times to ensure succession of colour in the spring, topped with autumn bedding to provide an instant pop of colour.
