In the medieval period, to be interred within a coffin was not widespread. It may have been dictated by the condition of the co**se and thus comply with sanitary regulations, but it was often a sign of status.

Coffins were, however, used to transport the body. Some parishes had communal coffins as a means for poorer people to have some form of dignity on their last journey. The bodies would be wrapped in a shroud ready for burial and placed in the coffin, which was used to carry the person to their resting place. After its use, the coffin was returned to the ‘coffin rest’ until the next burial. This practice continued into the eighteenth century, but the use of individual coffins was becoming more prevalent.

On the grounds of St. Mary’s Priory, an eighteenth-century ‘coffin rest’ has been preserved, which will be explored in our medieval town tour on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/online-booking/
