How I diversify my income as a full time illustrator 💰✨
A lot of my income comes from one main stream, wholesale. About 60% of my income is through B2B sales, mostly coming through Faire.
That’s definitely been a very important part of my business, but spending so much time on it has made me very aware of not relying too heavily on one platform! Alongside Faire I’ve been building my direct wholesale via email and trade shows 🛍️
I also make money through licensing, online shop sales, markets, a small amount of client work and hosting talks via . Some streams are more passive, some are more seasonal, some are slow burners and some are more active and require more effort.
One thing I’ve learned is you really can’t do everything at once. I’ve spent 5 years building these things up gradually, and there have been times when I’ve had to prioritise one area and put others on the back burner for a while.
I’ve spent 3 years focusing heavily on wholesale, which meant less client work. Now that I have a more established body of product work, licensing feels like a natural progression - that body of work has helped shape my portfolio too!
For me, diversifying income isn’t about doing absolutely everything all the time. It’s more about making my business feel less fragile and more sustainable long term, so I can keep making silly things until I’m an old lady 👵 I’ve still got a long way to go at mastering the income diversification, but after 5 years I feel I’m in a much safer place 💖
I’d love to know what income stream you’re most reliant on, and what you’re trying to grow at the moment? 👇
