WHAT MAKES A W**E WORTH DRINKING?

How to recognise quality beyond price, score and personal taste?

Two bottles on a table: one cost £60 with a massive score, the other is unscored and £15. The expensive w**e gets a polite nod, but everyone drinks a £15 bottle with dinner. Which is actually better?

Good w**e comes down to separating three distinct questions:

Is it well made? (the glass)
Do I enjoy it? (the palate)
Is it worth what i pay? (the value)

Scores open the door, but your palate has to walk through it. Feel confident read the rest on our blog to understand for you what makes sense. Drink what suits the moment 🍷

VINE FOLLOW POWER
How World History and Wealth Shaped the Global Map of W**e.

In his latest article, Rui WSET Dip. takes us on a captivating journey through history, exploring how w**e has never been just an agricultural product, it has always been an instrument of influence, prestige, and trade. The core thesis of the piece, “Vines Follow Power,” argues that the global distribution of vineyards and the reputation of major w**e regions have historically mirrored the rise and fall of political, economic, and imperial empires.

Your favorite w**e has a secret root system. 🌿
When a North American pest invaded Europe in the 19th century, the global w**e industry
nearly collapsed. The legendary fix? Grafting European Vitis vinifera onto bug-resistant
American rootstocks.
No American roots = no European w**e.

Portugal and Spain aren’t “under-discovered.
“ They’re just under-explained. 🍷
Iberia holds one of the oldest, most diverse w**e cultures on the planet. Yet, while the world
treats it like a recent secret, centuries of Atlantic breezes, Mediterranean heat, and hundreds
of native grapes have been sitting right in front of us.
The problem was never what’s in the bottle—it’s how we talk about it. 🍇
In our latest deep dive, Rui Santil DipWSET breaks down why Iberian w**e deserves to be
understood, not just labeled as a cheap alternative or a hidden discovery.

Global w**e consumption may be dropping, but young w**e lovers are shifting the game: drinking less, but drinking better. Instead of reaching for predictable, famous labels, the next generation is hunting for indigenous grapes, small artisanal producers, and hidden-gem regions with a story.
W**e isn’t dying; it’s evolving into an experience. It’s no longer about drinking more—it’s about caring more about what’s in your glass. 🍇🍾

One man from Baltimore completely changed the price of the w**e in your glass.
🍷
Before Robert Parker introduced his 100-point scale in 1978, the w**e world was a mystery.
But overnight, a simple score of 90+ could double a bottle’s price—and a 100-point score
meant it sold out forever.
The catch? Parker himself admitted that the gap between a 96 and a 100 was just “the
emotion of the moment.
“ And during a blind tasting of his favorite 2005 Bordeaux vintage, he
couldn’t identify a single w**e correctly.
Does a score actually matter, or are we just buying the hype? Drop your thoughts below! 👇

Stop saving that “special bottle” forever. 🍷
Here’s what most people get wrong: 99% of w**es are made to drink now. Even the expensive ones.
Eventually, every single bottle fades into oxidation and vinegar. It’s always better to open it a year too soon than a day too late.
There are only 4 things that allow a w**e to age for decades. Want to know what they are? What the video about Blueprint of w**e 😎🍷

I’m Portuguese, and my country’s most famous w**e exists because of someone else’s war. 🍷
In 1689, Britain went to war with France and banned French w**e overnight. Desperate for a replacement, British merchants turned to Portugal, but the w**e kept spoiling on the long sea voyage.
The fix? They dumped brandy into the barrels to preserve it.
That single, practical decision gave birth to Port.
By 1703, the Methuen Treaty gave Portuguese w**e massive tax breaks in Britain, and the trade exploded. British families flooded Porto, setting up shipping houses at the mouth of the Douro River.
That’s why if you walk through our iconic Douro Valley today, the estates don’t have local names, they’re called Taylor’s, Graham’s, Croft, and Sandeman etc.
British names, built on Portuguese soil, created by sheer accident. 🍇
