The Art Of The Unfinished Project!
Why my mitered square blanket is perfect as it is - and why I have no plans to finish it any time soon.
Looking back through my photos and old notes I estimate I have been knitting this blanket for the past seven or eight years, possibly even longer.
The actual knitting has been very off/on - considerably more off than on - it has to be said.
More than once I have declared it finished, woven the ends in and called it good. As long as by ‘woven the ends in’ you understand me to mean that I either snipped them short or I ignored them altogether 😂
And yet, every so often I decide that I’m not quite finished after all. Sometimes I find myself with a few grams of leftover, hand-dyed yarn that I think will look perfect, immortalised in my memory blanket. Sometimes I am just in need of some relaxing, undemanding knitting. Sometimes I just enjoy the comfort and the weight of having the blanket over my knees as I knit.
The blanket itself doesn’t judge it is happy to be my companion however I chose to spend time with it. And I’d like to persuade you, if I may, of the virtues of having a few half-finished projects on permanent rotation.
Reasons why finishing something is overrated.
1. A finished blanket can only be one size.An unfinished one is full of possibility. It’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure story, but in yarn.
2. An unfinished project never disappoints you. It remains forever perfect in your imagination.
3. It gives you something to look forward to. We all know how much we enjoy a bit of low-stakes anticipation.
4. An ongoing project is always ready to comfort you. A finished one just sits in a drawer being smug about itself 😂
5. Every few grams of leftover yarn you add is basically free therapy. Cheaper than therapy, warmer than a journal, and the journal doesn’t cover your knees.
6. Finishing closes a chapter. As long as the blanket is unfinished, you have a perfectly valid reason to keep buying hand-dyed yarn. No judgement here!

Ideal “Stash Buster” Crocheted Granny Square Blanket. Took me a while but finally finished.
