my winter wish list is well under way now - they’re not my christmas wishes but i hope they will correspond with yours!

last weekend, visiting my Mum, we sat in the garden, a lovely warm sunny afternoon - i was knitting up some super chunky wool & my Mum asked me -
‘what do you call that colour?’

i love this question, & thinking about it said -
PUMPKIN!

Mum - ‘well that fits well with this time of year - & i do like to see you working!’

it’s almost finished - i’ll be ready to show & tell soon.

T H I N K I N G W I N T E R

this is one of my all time favourite colour combinations - blue & brown,
or brown & blue - the emphasis can travel in either direction!

i’m trying to focus my energy on thinking winter now - & my knitting season in definitely in full flow.

there was a day last week where two customers asked me for wrist warmers - i had to say not yet - but soon - very soon!…
by the weekend i had the first pair cast on & work is in progress - it can be tricky when people visiting the city ask for knitwear - ‘specially when they’ve bought from me before.
i don’t like anyone to leave feeling disappointed!

september has been a busy visitor month - largely due to the amazing .
over the summer i always like to keep track of where customers have travelled from - besides the usual footfall numbers, & it’s really been a very cosmopolitan affair;

a new batch of lavender pockets are filling the studio with their warm & sleepy scent - the inner cotton pockets are made from an old & washed soft cotton pillow case - it has a lovely high thread count & was perfect for the job!
all the outer covers are reused shirting or trimmings from everything sold in &made.

my studio affiliate Lou often leaves a pile of off cuts on the desk & they eventually become part of a project.

this most recent crop are finished with a hand painted wooden button detail - this little product is a real tick boxes for me -
the growing,
the reusing, the waste not, want not
the pattern & plain,
& the twiggery

a satisfying list of lovely!

P O C K E T S

just recently Francis had told me about one of Benjamin Franklins sayings - ‘three people may keep a secret - if two of them are dead.’

this has nothing to do with this post really apart from it being a strange coincidence that a day or two later a customer told me about a B.J saying when we were talking about these new drawstring pockets - the first three were finished & sitting on my desk - waiting for a photo opportunity & she asked me what i intended them to be used for.

me - anything & everything - a little pocket to keep things tidy!

i have loved

from the first moment my friend & neighbour Eve Redmond Jewellery Manchester Craft and Design Centre & design centre asked me would i like to host a jeweller for the week in &made, meeting & planning her pop up exhibition in my studio, hearing Eve’s plans - & dreams for the festival - seeing some of my jeweller friends planning their pieces for the exhibitions, events & installations, it’s been fab!

we attended two preview events - wonderful work on show at the portico The Portico Library -

Jo’s work gets all the likes from me - i’m a long time fan!
i was hoping to buy a piece from this first jewellery week & i was immediately drawn to this brooch made by Jo for the city of suffragettes exhibition with the timeless message -

C O M M O N G R O U N D

a few months ago my friend, & studio neighbour, Eve Eve Redmond Jewellery Manchester Craft and Design Centre asked would i be interested in sharing some studio space with a jeweller for in September.

this inaugural event - hopefully the first of many - has been the dream of the organising team for years & to be a tiny part of it an opportunity not to be missed.
i said yes please!

Eve then introduced me to
Toni’s work is beautiful - more than jewellery - it’s wearable art & the details are just delicious!

Toni & I met for only the third time this week when she came along to Manchester Craft and Design Centre to install her exhibition - ‘verdant wanderings II’ - in my studio.

we discovered that we have so much in common - besides a love of twiggery - & had a fab day reminiscing about a life long love of making, Sindy - the doll you love to dress, cutting up cardboard boxes, & arriving home after a long wandering walk with three acorns & a pebble in your pocket!

batteries charged & back at my desk following our fab trip to amsterdam - always good to have some down time, take stock, make plans & prepare for the busy months ahead.

my neighbour at the craft centre Eve Redmond Jewellery, one of the organisers of the festival, has paired Toni & i together as we both have a love of twiggery & leafage - i’m really looking forward to sharing my space with Toni for the week - hope you’ll be able to come along & enjoy her work & some of the events taking place over the weekend.

this recent nature table offering is a memory of our recent trip - wandering about amsterdam & collecting falllen leaves & seed pods here & there.
at Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam there was evidence of the summers heatwaves - like home, the trees & gardens have suffered from lack of rainfall - i wonder if this weeks downpours will redress the balance?

one last little observation - i haven’t seen figs growing like weeds out of paving stones, & along the banks of canals, since a trip to Italy in 1970something or other!
have they escaped from peoples gardens - i wonder…

C U S T O M E R Q U O T E

…‘it’s way too warm to appreciate the qualities of wool’.

unfortunately the summer months are my full on knitting season so appreciating wools wooliness is my main focus at the moment!

this chunky, soft spun, 100% wool yarn is natural, sustainable & biodegradable, lovely to work, has beautiful stitch definition, & is easy to care for - although i do recommend hand washing - should it ever need washing!

this piece in &knit popcorn stitch is destined to become a soft & luxurious cushion panel for a|w26

the only dilemma - which colour on my needles next?!

this is how looks this week - i finished making a mess & am ready to start sewing.
i searched my way through three bags of offcuts to assemble all these panel & stripe pieces for a new batch of storage silo’s.
i have a lovely size assortment this time -
plant pot down to jam jar,
hanging stem silo,
then tall & medium size bottle covers -
& any small trimmings & left overs are being assembled into wrist pincushions!

i really enjoyed july - august has a lot to live up to - i’ve been busy with work - there’s so much to look forward to in the coming months - i hope i can live up to my own expectations!…

needles crossed!

we’ve been so busy in the studio - manchester’s tourist season is really picking up - i do enjoy talking [full stop!] with all our customers, & visitors - it really amazes me how people can travel half way round the world & walk through the door into our space & someone living five minutes away says they’ve lived in manchester all their lives & didn’t know we were here - right in the heart of the northern quarter!

do a lovely thing this week - & !

this week i met people from Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, Hong Kong, Finland, Scotland, Leeds - Yorkshire, Birmingham & Hull!

hope everyone enjoyed their visit - please spread the word!
