O N M Y D E S K

this is how looks this week - i finished making a mess & am ready to start sewing.
i searched my way through three bags of offcuts to assemble all these panel & stripe pieces for a new batch of storage silo’s.
i have a lovely size assortment this time -
plant pot down to jam jar,
hanging stem silo,
then tall & medium size bottle covers -
& any small trimmings & left overs are being assembled into wrist pincushions!

busy busy busy - snip snip snip!!!

i really enjoyed july - august has a lot to live up to - i’ve been busy with work - there’s so much to look forward to in the coming months - i hope i can live up to my own expectations!…

needles crossed!

we’ve been so busy in the studio - manchester’s tourist season is really picking up - i do enjoy talking [full stop!] with all our customers, & visitors - it really amazes me how people can travel half way round the world & walk through the door into our space & someone living five minutes away says they’ve lived in manchester all their lives & didn’t know we were here - right in the heart of the northern quarter!

do a lovely thing this week - & !

this week i met people from Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, Hong Kong, Finland, Scotland, Leeds - Yorkshire, Birmingham & Hull!

hope everyone enjoyed their visit - please spread the word!

S A M E but D I F F E R E N T

i’ve had a this & that kind of week - a little of everything - i was topping up on wrist pincushions - they’re a perennial favourite - especially when Sewing Bee is being aired on TV - it seems everyone catches the sewing bug in one form or another - sometimes, even, trying to finish the project they started during, or after, the last series!

anyway, i was tinkering around with my most recent little batch & was wondering about how to somehow incorporate a little knot of thread as well as the pins & needles - make into a little mending tool maybe…

… a wrist with a twist!

job done ✔️

& also -
this week i met Susan Sarandon
Harriet - yes -
Julian Sartorius - percussionist with Agnes Obel
& Tim Keogh - playwright
Oh! & did i mention
Susan Sarandon!!!

it’s been quite THE week at
manchester craft & design centre!

more desk top gardening this week - because honestly it’s too hot for the real thing!
making a new batch of flower power key fobs i’ve done something a little differently this time round & opted for pattern & pattern instead of the usual pattern & plain combo. i must have been feeling brave - it’s not my natural inclination but i did really enjoy this - & as this is a work in progress you can see both sides at once!
making a little flat lay with the fobs, like this, helped me to decide the decisions too!

i’d been searching through my photo library - looking for something or other, when i was distracted into revisiting my images from the fabulous Kaffe Fassett exhibition - 2023
perhaps that had been in my head when i started assembling these little print off cuts, the favourite part of my key fob making, there was a definite something in the air that day, making me braver & bolder with my double sided pattern choices!

fingers crossed - you enjoy them too!

keeping things simple is my natural inclination - having a little brainstorm & letting your imagination run away with you is all very well but, to my eyes, allowing every idea to make it to the final cut can just become confused.

in the past customers have apologised to me when they’ve described &made products as simple but i do understand the comment - & really, it is a compliment - keeping things simple allows the details room to be seen;
the lovely, slubby weave of the contrasting panel in the heavy, dark denim of this over sized tote, finished with hand stitched bar details on black leather handles.
look inside, all the likes for the subtleties of this blue two ways, hash print, lining, an internal zipped pocket & integral key keep - saving time on the key rummage!

no.1 of the new collection - denim, cotton, leather - a perfect, & simple, partnership!

there’s so much unseen hand finishing involved in my making - some i don’t want to be seen - i like a clean finish & i adopt a some old fashioned methods, to avoid top stitching, for example!
i’m basically using a form of tailors basting - it’s not always temporary in my makes - i use it as a kind of hidden anchor - particularly in my bag making, which has been my main focus this week - there’ll be more to show & tell soon…

meanwhile, like everyone else, I can’t believe it’s july - already! time to put my foot down & get moving - christmas is coming!!!

M O N D A Y , m o n d a y . . .

who doesn’t like monday morning - the start of the week, full of potential & making progress with all those things you want you achieve in your working week, not to mention that it’s following a sunday, where more than likely, you were ticking all those other jobs off the list - jobs that need doing, not necessarily the ones you want to do!

our sunday was so cool & slightly breezy, perfect gardening weather & there was an ‘open gardens’ event in our area this weekend - so much tidying, clipping & pruning & lawn manicuring in the lead up - rich pickings in the sweeping up including these dainty, bramley apple windfalls from our tree - it inspired me into a summertime nature table offering.

all the likes for the greens, the lines & shapes, the lush & lovely sights & smells of summer!

apple, ash, astrantia, box, campanula, cherry, chestnut, geum, honesty, hornbeam, hydrangea, ivy, laurel, meadow barley, plantain, rose, sweet pea, tiny snail shells & an escaped twist of garden twine!

all the likes for this lovely cotton yarn, it knits beautifully, has really good stitch definition & it’s attracting attention in the studio - always a good sign!
easy to wear & easy to care for - a summer favourite.

yesterday a visitor to was talking to me about cotton & it’s connection to Manchester - & how cotton was one of the main contributors towards making the city one of the country’s leading manufacturers of cotton products, so much so that Manchester became known as Cottonopolis.
The city became the global centre of the textile trade with strong connections to Africa, India & the Americas, & the Royal Exchange on Cross Street was built to house thousands of cotton merchants who traded in cotton twice a week.

i love this little connecting thread running through time, finding it’s way onto my knitting needles & maybe, eventually, being worn by you!

cotton neck knots in five colours - available now!

COTTON CARE
to maintain the shape & softness of cotton knitwear i recommend washing by hand with a mild, liquid detergent at low temperature.
wash once & rinse twice.
never wring - better to roll gently in a clean, dry towel.
never hang - dry flat away from direct heat & sunlight.

& to store - roll or fold loosely.

love mum x
