Conran Street Market Sold – Another Loss for the Community
Conran Street Market has been sold - no surprise, likely to make way for yet more flats. We understand that prior to the auction, offers were made by parties interested in preserving the market, with plans to incorporate storage units at one end. Reportedly, even an offer from the council was turned down. How true these rumours are remains unclear.
What is clear, however, is that serious questions must be asked about the suitability of the market’s most recent management. Based on all available evidence, they lacked the qualifications, experience, and vision needed to support and develop what was a valuable community asset. Despite claims to the contrary, it appears that from the moment they acquired it, they were preparing to dismantle the market - ultimately profiting handsomely from its sale. Perhaps it was always about their retirement fund. And who could blame them?
But the real shame lies in the broader picture: in a so-called democracy - particularly under Labour - communities like ours have almost no say in how their own neighbourhoods are shaped. As for our local councillors? We won’t waste breath. They’ve done nothing for Harpurhey in the last 30 years.
