Bulbs you can plant right now 🪻

Spring might feel a long way off, but now’s the time to get your garden ready for months of colour! Here’s what you can plant now, and when you can expect those first blooms.

💛 Daffodils – Plant now for cheerful yellow and white flowers from late winter into spring. Expect blooms from February to April, depending on the variety.

💜 Crocuses – Perfect for bringing early colour to lawns, pots and borders. Look forward to flowers from February to March.

💜 Alliums – Add height and structure to your borders with their striking, globe-shaped blooms. Plant hardy varieties now for flowers from May to July.

💗 Hyacinths – Plant now for beautiful colours and that unmistakable spring fragrance. Expect flowers in March and April.

A little planting now means a garden full of colour later. Which spring bulbs are making it onto your planting list?

Plant a Plum Noir Garden 🍇

One of 2026’s biggest colour trends has made its way into the garden. Plum Noir is all about deep, decadent shades of purple, burgundy, w**e and velvety brown — perfect if you prefer your borders a little moodier and more sophisticated.

Think dramatic blooms, rich foliage and plenty of contrast against deep greens, soft whites and silvery foliage. It’s particularly perfect for cottage gardens, cutting gardens and anyone looking to create a more luxurious, atmospheric outdoor space.

Ready to bring the look home? Try these J.Parker’s favourites:

🌿 Tulip ‘Queen of the Night’ — deep velvety maroon blooms that appear almost black

🌿 Tulip ‘Black Parrot’ — dramatic, feathered blooms in rich, velvety near-black

🌿 Tulip ‘Black Hero’ — giant, peony-shaped blooms in deep maroon and mahogany

🌿 Astrantia ‘Venice’ — rich burgundy-purple pincushion flowers with elegant green-tipped bracts, bringing the dark look into summer

🌿 Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ — clusters of striking purple berries that bring Plum Noir colour into the autumn and winter garden

The secret? Don’t be afraid to go dark. Layer different depths of plum, purple and burgundy together, then use green foliage and lighter flowers to make those richer shades really stand out.

Would you try the Plum Noir look in your garden? 🤔

Welcome to J. Parker’s Daisy Nook Garden Centre 👋

When we opened the doors to the new Daisy Nook Garden Centre last year, we promised our local community one thing: to bring back the Daisy Nook they knew and loved.

Ever since, we’ve transformed the garden centre from the ground up:

🪴 An all-new range of quality potted bulbs, perennials, shrubs and more, with new additions every single week.

🏡 A brand new range of home & garden furniture, decorations, lighting and homeware - for a one-stop shopping experience.

🍰 A complete overhaul of The Riverside Cafe - a new hot food menu, delicious baked goods and all sorts of light bites to enjoy on our new riverside terrace, overlooking the iconic River Medlock.

🎤 Doubled down on community room events, including monthly talks with guests, the children’s gardening club and even special charity events with some of the best-known TV gardeners!

So much change, and still so much to do. We still have so many plans to improve Daisy Nook even further, and we won’t slow down until we get there. That’s J. Parker’s 🌿

Meet Freya, our Nursery Technician at J. Parker’s 👋

Freya is our amazing technician behind our beloved nursery range, helping ensure our home-grown larger potted plants and shrubs remain in the best condition. From making sure plants get the sunlight they need to monitoring for any pests or diseases, Freya and the team spend every working day getting hands-on with every single pot.

Over the past few years, our nursery range has grown from a select range of potted shrubs to hundreds of thousands of 2L+ potted perennials, shrubs, and roses, all grown in-house from loose roots. Growing the plants ourselves, we can keep a close watch over everything, making sure customers like you only receive the very best 🌿

But it’s not just about quality; the price is also right. Larger specimens can be very expensive, sometimes too expensive for people to get the plants they love, but we know how important larger specimens are, especially for beginner gardeners not yet ready to grow from loose roots or modules. By growing our own range, we get to offer a much better price on everything - making gardening easier and more accessible for everybody.

And behind all of that is Freya and our amazing nursery team - that’s J. Parker’s 💚

From childhood memories in Donegal to an award-winning show garden in Essex 🌿

For J.Parker’s very own Edward Doherty, ‘Reflection’ is much more than a garden. It’s a celebration of family, childhood and the places that stay with us ❤️

Making his show garden debut at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair 2026, Edward brought memories of growing up in Donegal to life through colourful cottage-style planting, weathered oak, blackberry picking and the simple joy of spending time together outdoors.

And the result? 🏆

The planting is just as personal, combining late-season colour, bold structure and nectar-rich flowers. Dahlias, Salvias and Verbenas echo three generations of family gardening, while plants including Agastache ‘Blackadder’, Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’, Verbena bonariensis, Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ and Miscanthus ‘Ferner Osten’ bring movement, texture and colour into autumn.

It’s a beautiful reminder that the best gardens aren’t simply designed — they tell stories 🌱

How J. Parker’s are giving back with our community initiatives 🌱

As a family-run business for over 93 years, one of our fundamental principles is building community. Through events, charity work and more, J. Parker’s in the Community projects have reached all-new heights this year.

At Daisy Nook Garden Centre, we have a jam-packed calendar of sessions in our community room, ranging from talks from your favourite TV gardeners to discussions with a local historian. Not every event is gardening-related; we want to make sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the garden centre.

But it’s not all about what we can do in-store; we also work closely with several charities and organisations on a huge range of projects, like donating and planting sensory gardens at local hospitals, working with schools to get kids gardening, and even organising talks from famous gardeners to raise money for a nationwide cancer charity, helping to fund lifesaving cancer research.

Listen to Edward Doherty, our community & events manager at , as he delves deeper into all the amazing work we have the privilege of taking part in 💚

Spring planting inspiration: Apricot Sunset 🍑

Looking for a fresh colour scheme for your spring garden? Move beyond traditional blocks of yellow and red with an Apricot Sunset palette — a warm blend of apricot, soft orange, and burgundy tones, with a touch of brilliant white and blush pink.

We love this spring-flowering bulb colour scheme because it brings warmth and softness to borders and containers, while still making a real impact. The subtle variation between peachy tones creates a beautifully layered display, especially when you mix different tulip varieties, flower shapes and heights.

Create the look with:
• Tulip ‘Apricot Beauty’, our favourite
• Tulip ‘Salmon Prince’
• Tulip ‘Havran’
• Narcissus recurvus (’Pheasant’s Eye’)
• Fritillaria imperialis ‘Aurora’

For an even more striking display, add a touch of deep plum or purple – the perfect contrast to warm apricot and orange tones.

The best part? Planning your spring garden starts now. Plan your colour scheme now and get your late-flowering bulbs just in time for the autumn planting season.

Would you try an Apricot Sunset colour scheme in your garden? 💐

Our top 5 gardening jobs for September 📅

As we move into September, the days may be getting shorter and cooler, but there’s still plenty to keep gardeners busy. Harvest season is in full swing, bulb planting season is on our doorstep, and still months of late-season colour ahead. Here are our top gardening tips and jobs to help you get the most out of that potential.

1. Pick up spring-flowering bulbs for next year 💐
Plant Narcissi, Crocus and Hyacinths from now through to late October. These are just your early-flowering bulbs, so don’t forget to grab some new Tulips for some later-season interest.

2. Divide overgrown perennials 🪏
Perennials like Phlox, Hemerocallis and Astrantia can become congested - lift and divide them to encourage fresh growth and prolong their life. It’s also a great way to fill gaps or share plants with friends.

3. Refresh pots with autumn interest 🍂
Revive tired containers with Cyclamen, Heucheras, Heathers or Violas for fresh seasonal colour. These plants thrive in cooler weather and will brighten up patios through autumn.

4. Introduce spring bedding 🌱
Add Wallflowers, Pansies, forget-me-nots and other spring bedding to borders or pots while the soil is still warm. Early planting helps them root deeply and survive the cold months ahead.

5. Lift and store tender bulbs 📦
Gladioli, Begonias, and other tender bulbs should be lifted before frost arrives. Let them dry out completely before storing in a cool, frost-free place.

These are our top 5 must-do jobs for the month, but there are still plenty more jobs to be getting on with. For more tips on what to plant, garden maintenance and harvest advice, head to our blog to read more — link in our bio.

Happy gardening!

The Children’s Gardening Club at Daisy Nook — J. Parker’s new community initiative to inspire the next generation of gardeners 🧑‍🌾

When we first opened the doors to J. Parker’s Daisy Nook Garden Centre, one of our top priorities was to get the beloved community events back on track, and finally, the Children’s Gardening Club was born.

Our free-to-attend gardening club gives children the opportunity to get gardening: learning about plants, getting hands-on gardening tutorials, and experiencing the joys of planting a tiny specimen and watching it grow. Nowadays, children have fewer and fewer opportunities to connect with nature, and we wanted to do something to change that.

With our amazing instructor, Maz Lees (), we invite children and families from the local Greater Manchester area to enjoy a morning of gardening activities. From seed sowing to deadheading, we’re teaching practical skills to make sure the green-fingered gardeners of tomorrow find a genuine love and enjoyment for gardening, as we all do.

In this clip, hear from Maz, the children from the club and Edward Doherty from , as they explain just how beneficial this club has been 🙌
