Over the last few days, I’ve seen a lot of discussion surrounding the closure and liquidation of a local events company.
First and foremost, my heart genuinely goes out to every couple affected. Losing money and having wedding plans disrupted is incredibly upsetting, and nobody should underestimate the stress and disappointment that those brides and grooms are experiencing right now.
However, I’d also like to say something on behalf of the people behind the business.
Running an events company isn’t easy. The reality is that many business owners pour everything they have into keeping their companies alive. working long hours, taking on more and more work, making personal sacrifices, and carrying enormous financial pressure behind the scenes. Sometimes, despite their best efforts, circumstances become impossible to overcome.
What saddens me is seeing some people and businesses using this situation as an opportunity for personal gain, publicity, or criticism. Offering support to affected couples is one thing, and it’s something our industry should absolutely be doing. But publicly attacking, mocking, or labelling people as scammers when they’re already facing one of the most difficult periods of their lives helps nobody.
The couples deserve support. The staff who have lost their jobs deserve compassion. And the owners, regardless of the outcome, deserve to be treated with basic human decency and compassion at the very least.
None of us truly know the pressures, personal circumstances, sleepless nights, or sacrifices that happen behind closed doors. Many businesses are only a few difficult months away from facing similar challenges themselves.
As an industry, let’s focus on helping the couples rebuild their plans, supporting one another, and showing kindness rather than piling on to people who are already at rock bottom.
A little compassion costs nothing
