Striped carpet on a winding staircase, fitted today.

Worth knowing why this one's trickier than it looks: on a winding staircase every curved step has to be cut individually so the stripes still line up as they wrap round. Get it slightly wrong and the pattern breaks.

Ever wondered what happens before a new floor goes down?

This subfloor in Cambridge tested way too damp to install onto. So first came a damp proof membrane, left to dry, then a levelling compound on top, left to dry again. Only then could the actual flooring go in.

Skip this step and it's exactly how floors end up warped or lifting within a year.

It happens more than you'd think. A sample looks perfect in the shop, then gets home and suddenly looks completely different once the evening lights go on. Warm bulbs can shift a cool grey into something oddly yellow, while daylight bulbs can make a warm oak feel flat and lifeless.

Here's the truth 👀

➡️ Cheap flooring often ends up costing more, not less.

Budget options tend to wear, fade or lift within a couple of years, which means you're back to square one and paying for a full replacement sooner than you'd like.

Spending a little more upfront on something durable works out cheaper by year five, because it's still doing its job while the cheaper version has already been ripped out and replaced.

➡️ Longevity is where the real savings live, not the initial price tag.

If you're weighing up options and budget's tight, it's worth chatting to us. Not every room needs the priciest option, but the wrong choice in a high traffic area rarely pays off.
