Bare Root Wallflowers !

Although only sold for a short window, bare root wallflowers remain a popular choice as a classic cottage garden staple, and they should be arriving for sale from Saturday

Priced at £5 per pack, these packs will contain a minimum of 10 bare root plants, and as with anything bare root, it's important to keep the roots damp and get them planted straight away

We stock two varieties, the shorter "Harlequin" and the taller "Persian Carpet", both contain a mixture of flower colours.

You'll find them in the car park from Saturday x

Eucalyptus 'Azura' - the semi-dwarf variety

We've been busy in the nursery growing a crop of Eucalyptus that we've previously only been able to buy from Holland, but we've now got our own-grown crop ready to offer you at the bargain price of £12.50 (take a look online to see how expensive it is everywhere else !)

Still small plants, perhaps 18" tall, but the massive advantage of this variety is that you get that same lovely grey-green foliage of the common variety (Eucalyptus Gunnii), but on a plant that won't grow too enormous.

E. Gunnii is a very fast growing tree that can get to a height of 30-60 feet, and quickly too. 'Azura', however, has been bred to stay significantly smaller, and will mature at around 12-18 feet and will happily take a regular prune to stay smaller if you prefer.

They like the same conditions as their big brother - plenty of sunshine and well drained soil out of strong winds - but an altogether more manageable specimen than Gunnii.

Plenty of stock for the next few weeks - you'll find them at the back of the poly tunnel closest to our Sale area !

5 for a fiver ! or hanging cones just £12.50...

We've got loads of trailing pansy & viola, all looking great and only just starting to get going - they'll flower for months yet !

Currently £1.50 each but we have a special offer on this weekend where you can buy any 5 for just £5

Not only that, we've also made up some lovely hanging cones containing these little beauties. Our mixed Autumn hanging baskets are already on sale at £25, but these pansy-only baskets are on sale this weekend at the amazing price of just £12.50 !

Golden rule with pansy and viola - give them a regular check for spent flowers and seed pods and pinch them out - the plants will flower for so much longer if they're not allowed to set seed. A regular feed will also work wonders.

THIS WEEKEND AT THE PLANT MAN

Lots more lovely stock arriving this week, to swell the beds and give you something fresh and colourful to add a bit of interest for late Summer.

We've had the first of our evergreen Clematis in, only 30 or so plants across a wide range of varieties....all lovers of a sunny sheltered spot, and all varieties which flower in Spring. The evergreens love good drainage, so be sure to dig in handful or two of grit when planting.

Another few hundred wonderful Summer flowering heathers (Calluna), in whites and pinks. We've managed to keep these at just £2.50 each this time, thanks to a very friendly Dutchman. Cheapest we've had in a good few years!

But perhaps the most seasonal range now in full swing, are our range of Spring bulbs. All kinds of varieties as always, all priced keenly, from another of our Dutch suppliers.

Has anybody ever seen the Dutch bulb fields? Somewhere I've always wanted to go.....

Tulips, Scilla, Crocus, Dogs Tooth Violet, Anemone, in all manner of colours.

We have the biggest range of Narcissus around, either in larger bulk bags or for the pretty miniature types, in our standard packs.

And if any of you have admired our rose bed over on the overflow car park this year, cast your minds back to April and May, before the roses were even growing....the bed was a riot of colour with Allium 'Purple Sensation' at the back of the bed. Rich, deep purple heads on tall stems, lasted for weeks and weeks.

Well, they're here in stock too....

Its the perfect time to be getting your bulbs into pots and borders, now we've had some rain to make digging a might easier. Come and take a look this weekend, and if unsure, Gary and Caron are on call today to answer any queries you might have.

Try Narcissus 'Geranium' if you want something a little different. Fabulous spicy fragrance on multi headed flowers, flowering a little later than most Narcissus, brilliant for extending the season. If you like creamy white, 'Cheerfulness' is another multi headed with superb perfume.

Of course, aside from the slightly unusual, we've got hundreds of your typical daffs, too.

Try 'Rip Van Winkle' if you fancy bizarre-yet-beautiful....emerging with a hint of zesty green, fading to yellow in a big, busy head of double spiky petals. We love it!

TWO MORE PANICULATAS THIS WEEK....

Continuing their huge surge in popularity, we've got yet more Hydrangea paniculata down for sale this week.

'Phantom' is renowned to have one of the biggest panicles of flowers and if you take a look at them here, you'll definitely agree.

Creamy white and fresh as a daisy, they're a bargain in a 5 litre pot @ £17.50

Or if pink is your thing, we've just put out a super variety called 'Vanilla Fraise', a well established variety known for it's great pink-flushed blooms as it ages (they begin creamy white). Plants are a little smaller at £12.50, these probably won't flower until next Summer.....but brilliant for getting in the garden now.

We're huge fans of these Hydrangeas here, so if there's anything you need to know about them....just ask! Dead easy to prune, dead easy in a big pot, no need for Ericaceous compost, trouble free, hardy and bombproof....

It's more of a sun lover than the traditional Mophead too, the sunnier the spot, the stronger the stems and the better the flower display. Way more cold tolerant than the traditional Mophead too. Frost just won't bother it.

Not to mention none of the faff with pruning. If you prune it in Autumn, Winter or Spring, it'll still flower the following year (we recommend Spring)

Blimey they might just be our number one flowering shrub these days*

Prune hard......get the biggest flowers on a bush that won't get too big

Prune lighter.....get slightly smaller flowers, but more of them, on a bigger plant

Prune super light.....they'll turn into the most amazing 6-8 foot shrub in time. If you have the time and the patience, you can even prune them into the most wonderful multi stemmed small tree. Now THAT'S something your neighbours will admire!

AN INSTANT HEDGE AT SALE PRICES....

We have around 30 of Photinia 'Carre Rouge' going for less than half price, as we move more stock away from our old tree area, ready for diggers and dumpers arriving in November.

'Carre Rouge' in our opinion, is so much better than the original 'Red Robin....

Stays smaller at around 7-8 feet tall (Red Robin could easily get 10-12 feet

Tends not to flower as much, meaning less leaf drop than 'Red Robin'

So all in all, a better choice as a hedging plant.

Originally £125 each, we're now clearing these last 30 plants at £50 each. If you're after a bargain hedge that's pretty much instant, then you won't get better than this.

Around 4-5 feet tall, lovely and bushy, we'd go between 2 feet and 2 feet 6 inches apart, to guarantee a super duper hedge. Our Ian is around 6 foot 1" for a little perspective....
