THE MAGICAL SIDE OF SEWING.
Many old traditions regarded embroidery as magic. Some cultures even believed that working threads in this magical way could ensnare souls!
Witches reputedly used tangled thread to cast spells- but a similar tangle hung in the doorway would confuse the poor witch and keep her away. At Heirs and Graces we try to avoid tangled but we still create magic, love and laughter.

Because many early beads were often seeds, the word filigree comes from the latin filum meaning thread and granum meaning grain. At Heirs and Graces we have all the beads you need, including a large inventory of Mill Hill beads to embellish your Embroidery or beadwork

Sumptuous Laws - Textiles
Our present government has not yet tried to ban or tax coloured fabrics, but it was not always so. In ancient Rome purple fabric was strictly reserved for the Imperial Authority and in China yellow fabric was exclusively for the Emperor, with a death penalty for anyone who disobeyed. Today at Heirs and Graces we have no such problems - our whole pallette is open to all. PS. If you like our little factoids please share them. Thank you

HEIRS AND GRACES FACTOID No 17: US? or UK?.
Just to confuse us we use a lot of Americanisms in Quilting. One such confusion is WADDING which many American patterns refer to as BATTING.
There is no confusion at Heirs and Graces, we have Wool, Cotton, 80/20 and iron on wadding, by the roll and certain precuts including 2.5"wide rolls for jelly rolls.

Heirs and Graces has a very wide selection of pins for every different need, and pins are now an everyday item. It was not always so as pins were once so expensive that a dropped pin would start a major hunt. Pins were given as presents and even left in people's wills. In some places they were given as change when bartering.

No we aren't suggesting that you use nails instead of pins (or quilt clips) on your projects.
A NAIL is an old measure for fabric. It is a sixteenth of a yard or 2.25 inches. At Heirs & Graces we have lots of fat 16ths for your delight. These are really useful for little appliques and projects

In Medieval England a mercer specialised in selling textiles - especially quality fabrics.
The word originates from latin merx through the French mercer. Indeed an apt name for Heirs & Graces.

CHECKED CLOTH AND THE UK BUDGET.
We all hope the Chancellor of the Exchequer will be kind, but do you know how he got his title?
Exchequer comes from the old French word Exchequer which originally meant a chessboard. Henry 1st of England devised an accounting method of using a checked cloth to count money. Each square was used for a different denomination and the total was thus easier to add up. I expect No.11 Downing St. has a checked cloth for the breakfast table.
