🌿 Topiary Award Entry Spotlight: Karel Snellinx ✂️

We love this beautiful Boxwood cloud from Karel Snellinx who entered our EU Professional Gardener Category.

Originally planted as individual Boxwood balls, the idea was to bring the separate shapes together to create one continuous piece. Through careful trimming, the Boxwood has developed into a cloud-like form made up of soft, sweeping curves.

The Buxus is trimmed once or twice a year to maintain the shape, while careful attention is also needed to manage challenges such as fungal disease and Box tree moth.

A lovely whimsical piece of living art! 🌿☁️

🌿 Topiary Award Entry Spotlight: Grant Orchard ✂️

Professional gardener Grant Orchard entered our UK Professional Gardener Category with this wonderfully creative Yew topiary hedge, which he has been developing over the past five years.

Given free rein to create something both formal and quirky, Grant has combined classic tiers, cones and balls with some much more unusual characters – including peacocks, a snail, a chess piece and even a Martini glass complete with an olive and umbrella! 🍸🌿

A particular highlight is Boris the Dachshund, inspired by his client’s dog. Five years of careful training and stem selection have gone into creating Boris’s recognisable shape, with the challenge of forming four legs from just two Yew stems and patiently developing his three-dimensional ears. 🐾

The hedge still has some growing and filling out to do, but it’s fantastic to see Grant’s creativity, skill and patience bringing these characters to life.

🌿 Topiary Award Entry Spotlight: Daniel Hale & the Brodsworth Hall Team ✂️

Daniel Hale and his team at Brodsworth Hall entered our UK Professional Gardener Category, showcasing an incredible collection of more than 1,000 pieces of topiary.

With a team of seven supported by 60 volunteers, their mission is to keep the art of topiary alive for future generations to enjoy. Their passion for formal gardens and symmetry can be seen throughout Brodsworth Hall and their work has also caught the attention of Gardens Illustrated and BBC Gardeners’ World, where Brodsworth’s topiary has taken centre stage. 🌳

🌿 Topiary Award Entry Spotlight: Simon Newman 🦊🐾

Professional gardener Simon Newman entered our UK Professional Gardener Category with this fantastic Fox and Hounds topiary.

The creation began back in 2005, when Simon was asked to find a way to make a yew screening hedge more interesting.

Using steel rods and wire to create the initial forms, Simon carefully trained the growth before gradually introducing more detailed hand trimming. Over the years, the characters have even developed personalities of their own – including one hound who Simon says needs a "periodical diet"! 😄

Trimmed twice a year, the topiary creates a wonderful sense of movement and character, with the fox appearing to make its escape over the garden wall.

What was once a practical screening hedge has become a real highlight of the garden and a fantastic display of skill, patience and imagination. 🌳✂️

We’re currently testing a new roof rack for transporting our larger tripod ladders, and we’re pretty impressed with it so far!

Topiary Award Entry Spotlight: Scott Robertson 🌿

There’s a beautiful story behind this entry in our Home Gardener category.

Scott Robertson has transformed his front hedge into a living tribute to his beloved late dog, Momo, carefully recreating his form in topiary and taking inspiration from a statue of Momo in his back garden. As the topiary continues to grow, Scott will continue carefully refining Momo’s features and bringing even more detail to his creation.

A wonderfully creative entry and such a lovely, lasting tribute to Momo. 💚🐾
