🚻 The Friday Fix: Persistent Washroom Odours

If a washroom still smells unpleasant after cleaning, masking the odour with a stronger fragrance isn't always the answer.

Persistent smells can come from organic matter, bacteria and deposits such as uric salts, which can build up around toilets, urinals, grout and other porous surfaces.

🧽 The fix? Tackle the source.

✅ Clean the areas where odour-causing deposits build up
✅ Pay attention to grout, edges and hard-to-reach areas
✅ Use a suitable odour-neutralising cleaner rather than simply adding fragrance
✅ For persistent problems, allow the product enough contact time to work
✅ Don't forget drains and waste outlets — they can be hidden sources of odour

💡 Cleaning science: some odour-neutralising products work by trapping or neutralising odour molecules, while biological cleaners can use enzymes and microorganisms to break down organic matter causing the smell.

🧪 Cleaning Science: Why Does Grease Stick to Surfaces?

Ever wondered why grease can be so stubborn to remove? 🍳

The answer comes down to chemistry.

Grease and oils are hydrophobic, meaning they don't mix easily with water. This is why simply wiping a greasy surface with water often doesn't do much — the water struggles to break through and lift the oily residue.

🧽 So how do cleaning products remove oil and grease?

Many degreasers contain surfactants. These molecules have one end that interacts with water and another that interacts with oils and grease. They help break the grease into smaller droplets, allowing it to be lifted from the surface and rinsed or wiped away.

🔥 Heat can also make a difference. Warmer grease is generally less viscous, making it easier to loosen and remove — although the correct cleaning product is still important.

💡 Cleaning science tip: using the right type and dilution of cleaner is usually much more effective than simply using more product.

🧽 The Friday Fix: Streaky Windows

Ever cleaned a window only to find it covered in streaks once the light hits it? 😩

Streaky glass isn’t always about using too little cleaner. In fact, too much product can actually make the problem worse by leaving a residue behind as the glass dries.

A few simple fixes:

✅ Use the right amount of cleaner – more chemical doesn’t necessarily mean cleaner glass.
✅ Use a good microfibre cloth – it helps lift dirt and moisture without leaving lint behind.
✅ Don’t let the glass dry too quickly – work in manageable sections, especially in warm or sunny conditions.
✅ Use a clean cloth – grease, dirt and old chemical residue can simply be spread back across the glass.
✅ Finish with a dry microfibre to remove any remaining moisture and give the glass that streak-free finish.

💡 Cleaning science: streaks are often caused by a combination of residue, uneven drying and contaminants being redistributed across the surface. The cleaner your cloth and the more controlled your application, the better the result.

🧪 Cleaning Science: Disinfectants vs Sanitising Cleaners

Disinfectants and sanitisers are both used to help control microorganisms, but they aren't quite the same thing.

🦠 Disinfectants are designed to kill or inactivate specific microorganisms on surfaces when used correctly. They’re particularly useful where a higher level of microbial control is required.

🧽 Sanitising cleaners combine cleaning with a level of microbial reduction. They help remove dirt and contamination while reducing microorganisms to a level considered acceptable for the intended application.

💡 The important bit: neither product replaces good cleaning. Dirt, grease and organic matter can interfere with the effectiveness of disinfectants and sanitisers, so surfaces should be cleaned properly and products used according to their instructions.

And always check the product label, required dilution and contact time as these can vary considerably between products.

🧽 The Friday Fix: Greasy Kitchen Surfaces

Grease and cooking oils can be surprisingly stubborn to remove. But if you're reaching for more and more cleaner and still finding a sticky film left behind, the problem could be the type of cleaner you're using.

🥓 Why does grease stick around?

Cooking oils are largely made up of fats, which don't mix easily with water. That's why simply wiping with water, or using a cleaner that isn't designed to cut through grease, can leave a residue behind.

The fix? Use a suitable degreaser. These products are formulated to help break down and lift grease and oily residues, making them much easier to remove.

💡 A few tips for better results:
✔️ Remove heavy grease and food debris first.
✔️ Use the correct dilution for your cleaning product.
✔️ Give the product enough contact time to work.
✔️ Use a clean cloth or suitable pad to lift the loosened grease.
✔️ Always check that the product is suitable for the surface you're cleaning.

And remember, more chemical doesn't always mean better cleaning. Using the right product at the correct concentration is usually far more effective than simply using more.

🧪 Cleaning Science: Why does limescale form?

Ever wondered why that stubborn white, chalky build-up appears around taps, showerheads, toilets and other areas exposed to water?

It's limescale, and it's particularly common in hard-water areas. 💧

Hard water contains dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates, these minerals can be left behind and gradually build up into the deposits we recognise as limescale.

So, how does descaler work? 🧪

Most descalers contain an acidic ingredient that reacts with the alkaline mineral deposits. This chemical reaction breaks down the limescale, making it much easier to remove from the surface.

💡 Top tip: Regular descaling can help prevent heavy build-up and keep taps, washrooms and equipment looking cleaner for longer.

The important thing is choosing the right descaler for the surface and following the manufacturer's instructions. Stronger isn't always better!
