⛳ STOP OVERTHINKING YOUR GOLF SWING! 🤯

When you’re standing over the golf ball, what are you thinking about?

❌ Keep my head down!
❌ Turn my hips!
❌ Keep my left arm straight!
❌ Don’t come over the top!

Sound familiar?

Here’s something worth considering…

Think about WHAT you’re trying to do, rather than HOW you’re trying to do it. 🎯

There’s actually some interesting research behind this.

Studies into how golfers learn and perform have found that directing attention towards the club or the intended result of a shot can improve performance compared with concentrating on individual body movements.

For example, a 2024 study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise found that golfers learning a pitch shot demonstrated better accuracy in later tests when their attention was directed towards the effects of their movements rather than their body movements.

So what does this mean for your golf?

🏌️ WHEN PRACTISING

Work on your technique. Understand what needs changing and use exercises or drills to develop those movements.

🎯 WHEN PLAYING

Try shifting your attention towards the shot you want to produce.

✅ Where do you want the ball to start?
✅ What shape are you trying to hit?
✅ Where do you want it to finish?

Make your decision, picture the shot and commit.

That doesn’t mean technical thoughts are always wrong. Some golfers benefit from a simple swing cue, and research doesn’t show that one approach works best for everyone.

But trying to consciously control five different body movements while hitting a golf ball can make an already difficult game feel even more complicated!

💡 THE TAKEAWAY

Practise your technique. Trust it when you play.

Sometimes better golf starts with simplifying what you’re thinking about, not changing how you’re swinging.

🏎️ F1’S YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION IS 20… BUT GOLF’S YOUNGEST MAJOR CHAMPION WAS JUST 17! 🤯⛳

History was made at the Mexican Grand Prix as Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula 1 World Champion of all time!

🏆 KIMI ANTONELLI — 20 YEARS, 68 DAYS

The Mercedes driver secured the 2026 World Championship with a third-place finish in Mexico City, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s record of 23 years and 134 days.

An extraordinary achievement at such a young age!

But it got me thinking…

Who was the youngest golfer ever to win a men’s major championship?

🐅 TIGER WOODS — 21 YEARS, 3 MONTHS

Tiger famously won the 1997 Masters by 12 shots, becoming the youngest Masters champion in history.

An incredible performance that announced the arrival of a golfing phenomenon.

⛳ JORDAN SPIETH — 21 YEARS, 8 MONTHS

Spieth was another remarkably young major winner, claiming the 2015 Masters with a record-equalling total of 18 under par.

But neither holds the overall record!

🏆 YOUNG TOM MORRIS — 17 YEARS, 156 DAYS!

Back in 1868, Young Tom Morris won The Open Championship at Prestwick, becoming the youngest men’s major champion in golf history.

He went on to win four Open Championships, including three consecutive titles from 1868 to 1870.

And here’s another incredible fact…

His father, Old Tom Morris, holds the record as the oldest Open champion, winning in 1867 at 46!

Two generations, two extraordinary records.

💭 WILL WE EVER SEE THESE RECORDS BROKEN?

Antonelli has rewritten Formula 1 history at just 20 years old.

But Young Tom Morris’s record has stood for more than 150 years!

⛳ LUKE DONALD: ONE OF THE FINEST CHIPPERS OF THE MODERN ERA! 👀

What makes his technique so effective? Let’s break down ten key observations from his setup and swing.

🔍 THE SETUP

✅ Narrow stance: Creates a stable base and limits unnecessary movement.

✅ Hands down the grip: Shortens the club’s effective length, improving control.

✅ Ball positioned forward: Helps produce the trajectory and delivery required for this particular chip.

✅ Level shoulders: Encourages a balanced setup without excessive upper-body tilt.

✅ Pressure forward: Favouring the lead foot helps promote consistent ground contact.

🏌️ THE BACKSWING

✅ Limited wrist movement: Reduces unnecessary manipulation and helps simplify the action.

✅ Clubhead outside the hands: Prevents the club travelling excessively behind the body during the takeaway.

✅ Controlled clubface: Appears relatively closed, although face orientation must be judged relative to the swing arc.

🎯 THROUGH IMPACT

✅ Quiet feet: Minimal visible lower-body movement helps maintain stability.

✅ Upper-body rotation: The torso continues turning through impact, coordinating the arms and club without excessive hand action.

Notice the quality of his ground contact. The club appears to brush the turf with virtually no divot, consistent with excellent low-point control.

💡 WHAT CAN WE LEARN?

Great chipping isn’t about keeping everything rigid. It’s about controlling the movements that influence strike, trajectory and distance.

Not every detail applies to every chip, but Donald demonstrates how a stable setup, controlled club delivery and coordinated rotation can produce a beautifully repeatable action.

⛳ DRAW OR FADE? WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE? 👀

Two drives. Two different shot shapes.

But is one actually better than the other? 🤔

Here’s something fascinating about how the BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD hit their tee shots!

📊 PGA TOUR SHOTLINK DATA (2025)

Analysis of tee shots on par 4s and par 5s revealed:

↪️ 55% curved LEFT TO RIGHT
↩️ 41% curved RIGHT TO LEFT
🎯 Just 4% curved LESS THAN ONE YARD!

That’s right! Only 4% of the recorded tee shots were classified as virtually straight!

And what about accuracy?

⛳ LEFT-TO-RIGHT shots found 60% of fairways.

⛳ RIGHT-TO-LEFT shots found 58% of fairways.

⛳ Shots with less than one yard of curvature found 72%.

🔬 SO, IS A FADE BETTER THAN A DRAW?

Not necessarily!

These figures describe what happened on the PGA Tour. They don’t prove that one shot shape is inherently more accurate, particularly for recreational golfers.

And remember, left-to-right is a fade for a right-handed golfer but a draw for a left-handed golfer!

💡 WHAT CAN WE LEARN?

For most club golfers, I’d encourage developing a predictable, repeatable ball flight rather than constantly trying to hit the ball perfectly straight.

✅ Understand your natural shot shape.

✅ Develop a consistent starting direction.

✅ Reduce excessive or unpredictable curvature.

✅ Manage your dispersion and avoid costly misses.

A controlled draw can be every bit as effective as a controlled fade.

Ultimately, it’s not about which way the ball curves. It’s about how consistently you can control WHERE IT FINISHES!

🎯 THE TAKEAWAY

Don’t chase a particular shot shape because it looks better.

Develop the one that gives YOU the most predictable results.

⛳ THE SECRET TO HOLING MORE PUTTS? THE WORK YOU DO BEFOREHAND! 🎯

Watch this golfer hole a tricky DOWNHILL, LEFT-TO-RIGHT putt.

But here’s the interesting part…

The real work happened BEFORE he hit the ball! 👀

We spent time understanding the relationship between PACE and BREAK, exploring how different speeds would influence the putt.

🔬 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

The speed of your putt directly influences how much the ball breaks.

✅ FIRMER PACE – Generally means less break, but potentially a longer return putt if you miss.

✅ SOFTER PACE – Generally means more break, but can offer greater control over where the ball finishes.

Neither is automatically right or wrong. The key is choosing a sensible combination of LINE and PACE.

💡 WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE?

By exploring the different possibilities, the player developed a clearer understanding of:

🎯 How much the putt would break at different speeds.

🎯 Where the ball was likely to finish if he missed.

🎯 Which line and pace offered the best opportunity to hole the putt without taking unnecessary risks.

That understanding helped remove uncertainty and allowed him to COMMIT to the stroke.

And the result? A beautifully holed putt! 👏

🏌️ THE TAKEAWAY

Good putting isn’t just about having a great stroke.

It’s about making GOOD DECISIONS before you hit the ball.

UNDERSTAND THE PUTT. CHOOSE YOUR PACE. COMMIT TO THE STROKE.

👇 When you’re faced with a downhill putt, do you tend to hit it too FIRMLY or too SOFTLY?

Build the draw before you swing. ⛳️

This shot starts down the right side of the fairway and curves back towards the centre. Much of the preparation happens before the club moves.

Body alignment, ball position and clubface alignment all help encourage the delivery needed to produce that flight.

Look closely at his arms at address: the trail arm sits slightly lower and further back than the lead arm, with the lead arm slightly higher and more forward. This complements his body alignment and the intended swing direction - it doesn’t create the draw on its own.

For a right handed golfer, a draw that starts right and finishes centrally needs:

✅ A clubface pointing right of the target at impact.
✅ A swing path travelling further right than the clubface.
✅ A reasonably centred strike, because strike location also influences driver curvature.

The clubface largely determines where the ball starts. Its relationship to the swing path helps determine how the ball curves.

That means the face can be OPEN to the target while still being CLOSED to the path - an important distinction when you’re trying to build a draw.

Aligning the body slightly right can encourage a path to the right. Ball position influences where the club meets the ball along its arc, so it needs to complement that delivery.

With a driver, simply moving the ball further back isn’t a universal solution: it also changes your angle of attack and strike.

The aim is to organise the setup so the desired flight becomes easier to produce, without needing a last-second manipulation of the hands.

Start with the flight you want. Build a setup that supports it. Then check the start direction, curve and strike.

Save this for your next practice session.

⛳ STRUGGLING WITH YOUR IRON STRIKE? TRY THIS DRILL! 🎯

If you’re regularly hitting the ground before the golf ball, your LOW POINT could be too far back!

One of the most important elements of consistent iron play is controlling where the club reaches the bottom of its swing arc.

And that’s exactly what this drill is designed to improve!

🔬 WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH TELL US?

There are three important principles behind a good iron strike:

✅ ANGLE OF ATTACK

With a wedge or iron, we generally want the clubhead travelling downwards when it contacts the ball.

But steeper isn’t automatically better! The objective is an appropriate angle of attack, not an excessively steep delivery.

✅ LOW-POINT CONTROL

For a typical iron shot from the fairway, the lowest point of the clubhead’s arc should occur AFTER ball contact.

This helps produce ball-first contact and more predictable strikes.

✅ PRESSURE & PELVIS MOVEMENT

During the downswing, pressure generally shifts towards the lead foot while the pelvis moves towards the target and rotates.

These movements can help position the swing’s low point further forwards.

🎯 WHY THE DRILL WORKS

Placing an obstacle behind the ball provides immediate feedback.

It encourages you to avoid contacting the ground too early and develop a better awareness of your clubhead’s delivery.

⚠️ IMPORTANT!

I specifically use a WEDGE for this exercise.

It’s designed to exaggerate the feeling of a forward low point and descending strike, not encourage golfers to swing excessively steeply with every club.

Remember, good ball striking isn’t simply about hitting DOWN.

It’s about controlling WHERE the club reaches the bottom of its arc!

Could Olazábal’s nephew be heading for the European Tour? 👀🇪🇸

Joseba Torres was 120th in the Road to Mallorca rankings before September’s English Trophy. A remarkable run brought him into this week’s HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final in 23rd — with a DP World Tour card within reach.

His turnaround included:
▪️ Tied fourth at the English Trophy
▪️ Tied tenth at the Open de Portugal
▪️ Runner-up at the Hainan Open

Now the 24-year-old is challenging at the top of the leaderboard at Alcanada.

The stakes? Only the top 15 in the final season-long rankings earn DP World Tour cards for 2027. A top-five finish this week could complete his remarkable climb.

And his uncle, two-time Masters champion José María Olazábal, is helping him prepare. Having previously caddied for Torres, he’s supporting him as a coach this week.

Their work includes reading greens, understanding trouble and knowing where to miss — a reminder that competing at this level involves far more than swinging the club well.

Can Torres finish the job and earn his place on the DP World Tour? ⛳️
