We were in the presence of crime writing royalty last night as we hosted an event with Peter James OBE in Charlie’s Loft! 👑

The Milngavie venue was packed and the room was buzzing to hear from the award-winning author who has sold over 24 million books worldwide.

Queen Camilla’s favourite crime writer was celebrating the launch of his brand new Grace novel, Dead in Three Two One 📚

The interview was expertly conducted by local, McIlvanney prize-winning author Callum McSorley who’s debut Squeaky Clean was praised by Peter James as “an astonishingly good debut”. The interview delved into the real-life inspiration behind Roy Grace, the wide variety of work experience Peter has carried out for research purposes for his novels, and even a few stories from Buckingham Palace!

A huge thank you to our wonderful audience for giving Peter such a warm welcome, and to everyone involved in making the evening such a huge success 🥳

I have often thought that if I had to have a ‘real’ job instead of just making up stories for a living, my dream job would either be a librarian, or to work in a bookshop. A librarian gets to stamp things, obviously, which is a huge bonus, as stamping things is deeply satisfying for some reason. Also, in my Librarian Vision, naturally I would wear my hair in a severe bun and sport Serious Glasses, and then one day I would let down my hair and take off my glasses and a handsome tweedy sort of man would gasp at my stunning but hitherto unnoticed beauty and fall hopelessly in love with me.

My Bookshop Vision on the other hand, owes a great deal to watching Black Books, and in that I would drink a lot of w**e and chain smoke and wear black and shout rude things at the customers who would simply think me eccentric and a ‘character’.

Today though I got to try my hand at working in a bookshop and although there was no w**e or ci******es and I was very polite to all the customers, it was still TREMENDOUS FUN, and I got to use the till and everything!

I was helping out (I use the word ‘helping’ in the loosest possible sense, as I suspect I was more of a hindrance) at my lovely local Daydreams Bookshop as part of Bookshop Day, to encourage people to visit and buy from independent bookshops instead tax dodging billionaire’s emporiums. Most of us are guilty of being seduced by said emporiums sometimes, and I am no exception, but there is something so lovely about a proper bookshop, with staff that know every book on the shelves, and can recommend things you might never have heard of or thought of trying- I came away with three new books, and another one on order.

If you are lucky enough to have a local bookshop and you haven’t visited yet- go! No one ever regrets going to a bookshop. You get lovely new books, and you are supporting a small local business. And if you can’t get to a physical bookshop in person, you can still support indie bookshops by buying from Bookshop - I’ll pop a link in the comments.

And now I’m off to spend the rest of the evening reading one of my new books and ignoring my husband- another perk of visiting a bookshop…

⭐️Gruffalo Events Update⭐️

Daydreams will be closed to the public on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 October as we are holding our “Meet the Gruffalo” events 🐾

If you have a ticket for the event, please come along at your allocated time slot as we have a very full schedule both days and very limited space in the bookshop.

We will have an amazing selection of Julia Donaldson books and toys for sale including the brand new Gruffalo Granny! All books purchased on the day will receive a special Gruffalo stamp, but if you have a favourite Julia Donaldson book at home you are welcome to bring that with you for a stamp too (please limit to one book from home per child) 📚

Each family ticket accommodates 2 adults and up to 4 children. Additional adults may be required to wait outside to ensure an enjoyable experience for all of the children visiting 👧🧒

Come and meet our guest bookseller Gill Sims at Daydreams on Saturday afternoon 🥳 Peter and Jane

I have quite shamelessly nicked this photo from the Instagram page for my lovely local bookshop Daydreams, as I don’t have any of myself in their lovely shop with my books! BUT, if you are looking for something to do on Saturday 10th October, I will be at Daydreams in Milngavie from 2pm for National Bookshop Day! I will be experiencing being a book seller, as opposed to a book buyer or book writer, and I would love it if some of you wanted to come along and say hello, and maybe buy a book or two (doesn’t have to be one of mine) or get a book signed (ideally if you want me to sign a book, it would be one of mine, but I’m not fussy, I’ll sign anything. Within reason…). And you’ll be supporting independent bookshops at the same time too! Plus, there’s lots of lovely cafes and pubs in Milngavie too, if you wanted to make an afternoon of it!

We had great fun yesterday organising and hosting creative writing workshops with local bestselling author Gill Sims at Douglas Academy and Bearsden Academy ✍️🏫

Best known for her “Why Mummy Drinks” series of books, Gill has recently turned her hand to young adult books and enjoyed speaking to the pupils about her unconventional route to becoming an author.

Her young adult “Lila Mackay” series uses a diary format to compare life as a teenage girl in the 90s to present day and the creative writing task had a similar theme - with interesting results!

We hope all of the pupils enjoyed the workshops. Signed copies of Gill’s books are available from the bookshop now and Gill will also be guest bookselling at Daydreams on Saturday afternoon for Bookshop Day 🥳📚
