Mohammed Aarab, best known by his nickname Kosovo, is a native of Essaouira, a fishing port on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco, just over two hours drive from Marrakech. Kosovo worked as a designer-maker in the artisan quarter of Essaouira for almost a quarter of a century crafting beautiful thuya wood giftware products in his workshop. Kosovo met Helen, the other half of My Moroccan Folly, in 2009
when she was living in Essaouira. Helen is a native of Liverpool who spent her childhood in North Wales. In June 2012, Kosovo started a new adventure beyond Essaouira when he joined his wife, Helen, to live in North Wales. His beautiful thuya creations migrated with him. My Moroccan Folly was born out of our shared love for the province of Essaouira. Our venture is inspired not just by the thuya tree that is unique to the region but also by Berber heritage and sustaining the artisan skills that Kosovo and others in Essaouira are famed for. Our inspirations are trees, nature, art, artisanship and beauty, living at the crossroads of cultures, and making. We are passionate about sharing the gifts of Essaouira with a wider audience. Please note: All our thuya wood giftware products are designed, and made by Kosovo with the wood offcuts sourced sustainably. My Moroccan Folly started its life as a phrase that Helen first attached to the land and half built house she was building on the end of an argan forest, protected by the Forestry Commission, 3km away from the village of Sidi Kaouki and its surf sands in the province of Essaouira. My Moroccan Folly is inspired by the two most abundant trees of the province of Essaouira, Morocco - Thuya and Argan - and by Berber heritage.
