Morden Hall Park NT

Morden Hall Park NT FREE entry. Childhoods begin paddling and splashing, climbing in trees and playing through meadows. A place to meet, to fall in love, to form memories.

An ancient, Arcadian country estate of fine trees and open skies, enveloped by London and saved by a far-sighted philanthropic. ‘Our park’, a place owned and loved by those who use it every day. Water is everywhere, the harnessed power of the river Wandle which drove local industry and milled snuff: surging in places and tamed in others. There are no barriers at Morden Hall Park: either real or im

agined. This is the National Trust for ever, for everyone. Commuters walk to work, teenagers ride their bikes, mums relax in the rose garden and locals meet in the café. Wildlife is abundant: kingfishers, herons, dragonflies. London is ever present: the regular rattle of the tram, birdsong mixing with sirens but escape and tranquillity is never far away.”

These Comtois breed heavy horses have been back in the park this week. We hope you got to see them.

They tow an Allen Scythe, a cutting tool that operates differently from modern tractors. This traditional method is less harmful to wildlife, helps boost biodiversity and climate resilience in the meadows.

Cutting the meadows is a way helps them regenerate, creating nutrient-poor habitats that wildflowers love. It removes vegetation such as native grasses and nettles, temporarily reducing the amount of nutrients absorbed into the soil. This allows the wildflowers to thrive and create a vibrant, biodiverse landscape buzzing with insects, butterflies, and birds.

The slower pace of horses allows small animals, insects, and birds more time to move out of the way.

And with no emissions, the air is cleaner, reducing the impact of pollution on plant and insect life.
