Guess which bird is flying down to " that there London "?!!!😱

I'm in shock. I actually found out last Friday but have taken a while to get over my initial shock!

My "Curlew - Preparing for Take-Off " has made it through to the Royal Society of Marine Artists summer exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London!

Huge thanks to those RSMA Members who voted for it, and also to Janie-the-Wood ( aka Isambard) for engineering advice.

As ever, the sale of my Curlew will generate a donation to .org. Supporting the wonderful work they do to conserve this beautiful bird.

I'm off for a lie down😁

Hope you're all OK!
Take care
Steph

Curlew - Watching

Here's my latest, a Curlew...... Watching

I'm so lucky. During my dawn walks with Freddie, I invariably see Curlews on the Causeway, or hear their distinctive cry. Easy to spot in silhouette, a long, elegant beak is the clearest identifier to the Curlew.

Sale of this piece will generate a donation to

The third picture shows a lovely surprise I received in the post this week. The Curlew Way edited by . It's a wonderful anthology of all things " Curlew". Well worth a read!

Hope you're all ok and have survived the heat.
Take care

Curlew- Preparing for Take-Off..

It started when I found the driftwood perch....love at first sight πŸ₯°. I could just envisage a Curlew taking off from the top!
I consulted my pal, " Janie-the-Wood" (aka " Isambard"),would this be possible?

I've been itching to try a Curlew taking off, but it took a while to figure out a way to do it.
I'm still a tad obsessed with wing creation and Mightily obsessed with Curlews (as you know!)

I'm sure you're all aware that Curlew is on the UK Red List of Endangered Birds. As an Ambassador for .org, I try to raise awareness through my work.Sales of my birds will always generate a donation to them.

Incidentally, HUGE congratulations to (Director of Curlew Action), who was recently awarded an MBE for her services to Nature. I just think of her as "Queen of Curlews",their greatest champion, in human form!

Well done Mary, it's about time!πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

So..here's my Curlew, preparing for take-off. Can you help me out please? Which photograph suggests " take-off" , best, to you πŸ™ˆ First or second pic?!

Take care everyone

Deceit!

Morning All,
Hope you're ok? I've been flying under the radar due to work ( wiring like a demon) and trying to contain/train/ control my Parsons JRT puppy....

Here's a work sample....don't faint, not a Curlew, but definitely in my top 3 favourite birds, the Lapwing. They're quite prolific here in Morecambe Bay, but in reality, they are on the Red List of Endangered Birds in the UK.

They often hang around in groups, identifiable by their distinctive "quiffs"! I often see them in silhouette, which is what I've tried to recreate here.

I'm also including a page of my sketches, suggested by my pal, .... I think I'll stick to wire...🀣

Did you know....the collective noun for Lapwings is a " deceit "?
Apparently, in a bid to protect their nests, adult lapwings often feign injury, like a broken wing, to lure predators away! How smart is that?!

Curlews next week.....obviously............I'm obsessedπŸ™ˆ I'm lucky enough to see them every day here.

Take care and stay coolπŸ₯΅

Heads Up!

It's World Curlew Day!

The day on which we mark the laying of the first Curlew eggs ( quite a few birds couldn't wait!)

Here's a throwback , a duo of my birds posing on the shore in Morecambe Bay.

Please head on over to to check out the activities to celebrate this amazing but endangered bird.

If you can, please make a donation to support the wonderful work that curlewaction.org does. Every little helps!

Take care

Share My Joy....and Apologies!

Where do I begin? Firstly I must explain my absence ...it can be summed up perfectly by the 3rd picture 😱 All consuming....a complete terrorist and I LOVE him!

The first update is that I've been elected as an Associate Member by the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts !!!! I'm already overwhelmed by imposter syndrome πŸ™ˆ but SO grateful πŸ™

The second update relates to a recent conference, organised by , at Lancaster University. The European Fieldworker Workshop was awesome! I learned SO much and met some brilliant birdy people.
I was also delighted to share the Curlew work I did with Primary Schools a couple of years ago.

Finally.....I'm just dipping my toe into lapwings...Fred eats EVERYTHING, so having bits of wire pinging around our shared space is always scary 😨

Hope you're all OK and keeping warm and dry!
Take care

A Mixed Bag....

Delighted to visit the RSMA Preview this week. The exhibition is fab, as usual and well worth a visit.
My guide was my wonderful cousin Christine ( aka Dame Nelly....as she is an actual Dame.. I know I've mentionedit before... 😱🀩 so proud of her!) and we also met up with friends we haven't seen in over 30 years!!! It was so exciting and we were nattering so much that we only managed a couple of photos... here we are standing in front of my exhibit.
Chuffed? Oh yes! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

The second photo shows a Curlew commission, which flew down to the lovely Rev Sue, who lives in the village where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed! A birthday gift for her husband πŸ₯³

The last photo is simply because it makes me smile when I see it. Here's Freddie, 5 months old and a Parsons JRT. He brings me absolute JOY and exhaustion on a daily basis!

Hope you're all OK!
Take care and keep dry

Share My Curlew Joy?

I'm actually speechless....those who know me will appreciate what a rare event this is!!

My Curlew will be flying in to the Annual Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London this September!!!!!

WHOOP!!!!πŸ₯³

I was thrilled at the responses she generated on Instagram and FB ( thank you!) but dared not hope she'd get in.

As you are aware, I'm an Ambassador for . Sale of this piece, would generate a donation to their ( tireless) efforts to protect the iconic bird.

More details of the Exhibition to follow, but in the meantime, massive thanks to the RSMA for selecting my work and to Mall Galleries for their patience ( I ask inane questions πŸ™ˆπŸ˜)

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Take care

It Started with the Perch....

Yet again, the perch! The shape reminded me of the a Curlew ....beak, stance, who knows.

I had no choice!

I must confess to a bit of an obsession with the bird - in case you hadn't noticed!

Forgive me if I've told you before ( you probably know anyway ) but the collective noun for Curlews is a herd or salon or skein. How beautiful....a skein..

I just wish there was a Curlew emoji 😁

Sale of any of my Curlews generates a donation to , working hard to protect this iconic but endangered bird.

Hope you're all OK!

Happy Sunday
Take care
