Antique Caucasian Kuba region long rug / runner of outstanding design.
Circa 1890.
The rug has four large colourful medallions on a dark indigo ground, this style of medallion is found on a well known group of rugs attributed to the kuba region of the north eastern Caucasus, the weavers are of Shirvan origin. The field is filled with many small animals and birds, along with other tribal design elements. A feature of this rug is the main border, which is a stylised floral arabesque, the use of red against the light indigo blue makes this particularly striking. This border design is also associated with a very small group of rugs, usually of early date from the Kuba region. Please dm for details.
