Learning to Follow is a concise and accessible book on Christian discipleship, aimed at helping believers understand what it means to follow Christ in everyday life. Having clear biblical teaching and helpful practical reflection, Stephen and Martin emphasise that discipleship is not merely about belief, but about ongoing obedience, growth, and transformation.These experienced evangelists know the struggles and interests of newly formed disciples and this book is excellent as a primer to the issue of lifelong discipleship.
The book excels in clarity and brevity. At around 150 pages, it presents its ideas in a straightforward, structured way, making it suitable for personal study or small groups. Its tone is pastoral rather than academic, focusing on encouragement and practical application rather than theological complexity. I have used it to support pastors in Uganda and also working in a refugee church amongst Farsi speakers in London where English is a second language.
The book’s simplicity doesn't feel limiting but I believe it is pitched exactly right as an introductory guide rather than a comprehensive treatment of discipleship.
Overall, Learning to Follow is thoughtful and readable primer and it is particularly valuable for newer Christians or those seeking a clear, no-nonsense reminder of the fundamentals of following Jesus.
