Artist Janet Kleboe lives in the beautiful
Ayrshire village of Sorn, where she creates her art by drawing, painting, dying, stitching and quilting with her textiles. She produces small pieces which can be framed to the individuals choice to much larger works that would really require to be the central focus in a room.

Janet originally qualified as an architect. She worked for ten years, became registered and chartered, then had the pleasure of working in her very own Practice. She spent six years at Historic Scotland working as a Conservation Architect while studying and then obtained a Masters of Science Degree in Cultural Landscapes in 2006.

Although may think Janet’s original career and her now chosen arts discipline are miles apart there are actually many threads that connect them. Janet has written an in-depth piece about her work which is available on the Open Studio Ayrshire website which describes her inspiration and motivation behind her pieces.

There is a large original piece of Janet’s available in the Gallery entitled “The Olive Tree” as well a selection of smaller works and good quality prints.

Ayrshire Artist Lizz Campbell has a beautiful range of subjects drawn from the natural world with a style very much inspired by her love of Art Nouveau and the Pre Raphaelites.

She studied Graphic Art & Design at Glasgow College of Building and Printing. I have chosen a pencil drawn self portrait to introduce her rather than a photograph which was included in her portfolio at seventeen. Not only is she very recognisable today from this drawing but it shows her style and themes even then and is a visual metaphor of her connection with nature 🍃 🍁 🍂

There are a few original works from Lizz hung in the gallery. She has submitted two framed acrylic paintings of trees which although are available individually would compliment a home interior very well as a pair!

There is a beautiful selection of Lizz’s designs in card form on display in the Gallery each of which are also available as larger framed prints and cushions.

Artist Jeffery Richards resides in Cumnock but his artistic journey began in Battersea, South London. He discovered and practiced art at an early age, from drawing on the classroom walls, to studying interior design and then working with interior construction companies.

His career designing shop displays, shops and offices often took in the entire block for companies such as Burtons and Debenhams. Designs which l had the pleasure of viewing when collecting pieces for the Gallery!

Jeffery studied painting at Putney College of Art & Design and there are four of his paintings in the gallery. His Van Gogh inspired sheep l thought was very current as Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is currently touring the globe and will be arriving in Edinburgh in March 🌎

Jeffery produces digital artwork on the computer which can be printed on canvas as well as traditionally with both acrylic paint and fibre tipped pens.

A selection of his abstract work can be found on Artfinder.com

Jeffery has a large body of work which would certainly deserve the opportunity of a solo exhibition in a space that could do the collection justice!

Harry Sutton lives in Kilmarnock and has been painting in the area for thirty years. He graduated from Glasgow Art School in the seventies and was an art and design teacher in Ayrshire for 35 years.

Harry works in oil, acrylic, watercolour and pastel. His subjects include portraiture, still life and landscapes inspired by the Scottish Highlands and the West Coast.

He has exhibited work both individually and with groups in all over Ayrshire, including The Dick Institute, The MacLaurin, The Harbour Arts Centre and The Studio Gallery, Millport to mention a few.

Harry recently created a very special mural for the Isle of Cumbrae Distillers with painted scenes of favourite island spots which is quite something to behold!

There are a number of Harry’s original works in the gallery. These strong colourful scenes would make a great edition to adorn the walls of many a home or establishment.

Delighted to have a couple of Franzeska Ewart’s pieces of work in the gallery!

“A writer for thirty years, Franzeska paints highly detailed and atmospheric images that have a strong narrative thread running through them. She works in oils to create pictures which show women receiving very simple gifts from birds - berries, flowers, leaves - these gifts from the natural world being magically transformed into things of great value for thier recipients.”

The beautiful piece below is oil on canvas board, measures 18 x 18 cm and is entitled “Song of the Orchid.” The bird itself is a Splendid Fairy Wren, native to Australia and l am told they are as common as sparrows in some areas 💙

Franzeska and her partner Adam McLean set up the Kilburnie Art Gallery, which provides a space for individual artists to exhibit a wide range of their work in format of one-person shows. They have held thirty thirty-three since opening in 2017.

Artist Sue Howit has a colourful collection of creations on display at the Braw Gallery!

From her studio on her home farm in Catrine she creates a range of original art on various surfaces including canvases and wood blanks. She works in a number of mediums including acrylics, watercolours and oils, also adding gold leaf to many of her pieces. Sue produces quirky and unique pieces to treasure and decorate any home.

Sue’s lovely watercolour pictured below is entitled “Patchwork Field”, is simply framed and comes complete with certificate of authenticity. It has taken the eye of quite a few people. There are prints available in the same design.

She has submitted a beautiful canvas entitled “Flower Vase”, created with acrylics and gesso to create a three dimensional textured surface. Sue has left the option of framing this piece to the buyer but many prospective buyers and viewers have expressed they like it just the way it is.

There is also a lovely selection of hanging decorations to choose from, which have both a bird and tartan theme.

Alison Lyon was born and brought up in Ardrishaig, Mid-Argyll, where she started painting while still at school. There she had the pleasure of having John Lowrie Morrison as an art teacher, the Scottish contemporary artist, who produces expressionist oil paintings of Scottish landscapes and is possibly better known now as Jolomo.

She moved to Glasgow and graduated with a BSc Civil Engineer from Glasgow University. After working for several years in engineering, she decided to return to more creative pursuits and took up painting again.

Alison now lives and works in Muirkirk, where she and her husband have raised their family.

Alison said” Growing up in Mid-Argyll made it very difficult not to paint! The drama and light are ever changing, and I love the wonderful skies. I work in oils and pastels and return to the West coast regularly to recharge my soul. My paintings are honest and as I see them. I hope you enjoy them.”

I have the pleasure of having a few of Alison’s pieces in the Gallery, including an oil deption of the Garpel water in spate with the iconic Tibbies Brig in the distance. This dramatic piece is definitely best viewed in person to experience the atmosphere!

Alison has work in private collections as far as Canada, Jersey and France.

After the success of Josie Neill’s book in the Gallery, l decided to add another poetry book to the shelves, from another writer of Scots who also originally came from the Leid town of Muirkirk.

Stuart Paterson’s “A Squatter o Bairnrhymes” is described on the front as “wee gems o Scots language poems for wee weans an big weans”. This compendium illustrated by Zack Fummey has been a popular edition to the gallery and there are definitely a few more as presents under Christmas trees this year🎄

“Stuart A Paterson is one of Scotland’s best-known poets. In a prolific career over 30 years, Stuart has been the official Poet in Residence at BBC Scotland and the Scots Language Centre and has taught Scots to learners in Scotland and across the world. Stuart works for the Scottish Qualifications Authority supporting schools delivering the Scots Language Award.”
