CREWE HAS A NEW PLATFORM FOR ART

I’m delighted to share that two pieces of my own work have been selected for PLATFORM:ONE—the inaugural group exhibition at PLATFORM:Gallery in Crewe.

Running from 19 September to 19 December, the exhibition brings together work by 65 talented artists from across Cheshire East—and entry is completely free.

PLATFORM:Gallery is Crewe’s first dedicated contemporary art space, run by the not-for-profit CreweCreates CIC and led by Jamie Chalmers of Mr X Stitch and Novae Baghurst alongside the CreweCreates team.

What began as a small temporary space in the Market Centre has grown into an ambitious, multi-floor gallery in the former Burton’s building. It’s a brilliant example of town-centre regeneration in action: an empty high-street unit brought back to life as a place where artists, makers and the wider community can come together.

As an artist—and as the owner of Beyond Canvas—I’m especially pleased to have two pieces included in the gallery’s first group show.

ROLLED CANVAS TO READY TO HANG

I know the name above the door says Beyond Canvas—but there has certainly been no shortage of canvases in the workshop lately!

Alongside customers bringing in rolled paintings for stretching, I’ve been making bespoke blank, primed cotton canvases for local artists such as —and for customers pursuing their own paint-by-number passions.

The beauty of preparing a canvas is that it can happen in two stages:

Phase one: Stretch it onto made-to-measure stretcher bars so it can be hung and enjoyed straight away.

Phase two: Once the decorating is finished and you’re more certain about the room’s colours and style, bring it back and we can choose the perfect outer frame.

There’s no obligation to add a frame, of course. A properly stretched and finished canvas can look fantastic on its own—but a carefully chosen frame provides that final flourish and some additional protection around the edges.

A little workshop tip: Please allow at least 4cm of spare, unpainted canvas around the image. This gives me enough material to secure it to the stretcher bars and achieve the right tension without losing any of the artwork around the sides.

Current hours and occasional closure dates are published on the website and social channels, recorded on the answerphone, displayed on the door and shown on the digital window screen.

As a one-person specialist business, I cannot operate quite like a national retailer—so checking ahead is particularly sensible if you’re carrying something large, valuable or awkward.

A quick check can prevent a wasted journey, and I’d much rather make room for your artwork than have you arrive while I’m somewhere else.

A toddler, a bathroom wall and the contents of a potty: one of two original Alex Calder paintings arrived with a more eventful history than most.

Thankfully, the artwork survived. The collector brought the pair to Beyond Canvas for a new presentation that would complement their bold colours and late-1960s/early-1970s character.

The old framing was replaced with warm Sahara mounts, characterful Havana Worn Black frames from LION Picture Framing Supplies, LION Picture Framing Supplies and conservation UV glass from Wessex Pictures

The result feels brighter, more confident and entirely in keeping with the paintings’ mid-century aesthetic—while placing that memorable domestic mishap safely in the past.

These three late-nineteenth-century watercolours arrived in their original ornate gold frames, but the old, mounts were distracting from the pictures. An update was needed.

Rather than replace frames with so much character, we carefully dismantled each picture, removed the old mountboard - which was also showing signs of moisture damage on the back and introduced new, conservation standard, Antique White mounts. UV conservation glass provides additional protection before everything was reassembled and made ready to hang.

The original frames retain their history, while the quieter, lighter presentation gives the watercolours renewed life.

Good reframing is often about knowing what to change—and what deserves to be kept.

Nantwich Food Festival is nearly here—and Beyond Canvas will be open on Sunday for a rather different kind of treat.

Our monthly Art Sundae offers a relaxed opportunity to step away from the festival crowds, browse original and limited-edition art, and discover the changing work presented through PAUSE.

WE'RE PAUSING PAUSE...
..for just one more week.

After yesterday's extraordinary rainfall caused some water to find its way into the shop, and with more unsettled weather forecast across the Bank Holiday weekend, I've decided to postpone our inaugural ART ON SUNDAY event.

The good news?
We're moving it to Sunday 6 September — right in the middle of Nantwich Food Festival.

PAUSE will be installed and ready to discover throughout the festival weekend, with our first dedicated ART ON SUNDAY opening from 10am–5pm.*

Sometimes even PAUSE needs a pause.

“Do you sell art prints?”

Yes—although Beyond Canvas presents them rather differently these days.

Before last year’s makeover, prints filled almost every available space in the shop. Today, it is a calmer working showroom, with room to explore framing choices alongside a changing selection of original and limited-edition art.

That selection will continue to develop through PAUSE, our Featured Artist Programme, bringing new artists, exhibitions and events into the shop.

The art hasn’t disappeared. It has simply been given more room to be discovered.

These Michelin-starred restaurant menus mark special celebrations shared by one customer with his wife and family.

Each was given a bespoke arrangement, with carefully cut apertures and double mounts reflecting the restaurant’s own stationery and colours. Alphamat Black mountboard and gloss-black frames bring the individual pieces together as one confident collection.

The finished pictures hold far more than menus: each preserves the memory of a treasured occasion shared with someone special.
