NEW STOCK ONLINE! A carefully curated little selection for you all today. We have a huge bronze figure of The Venus de Milo by Ferdinand Barbedienne, the famous Parisian foundry. What a decorative thing it is! In great condition and wonderful quality. There’s also a Georgian bureau on stand which is very unusual in that it is in Yew wood. It also has a lovely interior. A view of low tide near Watchet by Clifford Hanney is the first oil painting and the second is a rather brilliant French impressionist oil of a boat on the sea at night. All available to view at the website or dm me and let’s chat!

The cup bearers frescoes at Knossos illustrate brilliantly how Egyptian art influenced that of Bronze Age Crete but also how it became something new. The formality of Egyptian art can already be seen to be moving to something freer, less rigid and more strikingly coloured.

Take a look with me today at this painting. A work by the Nottingham artist Edwin Walter Marsh who exhibited between the wars and here exhibits a great talent for self portraiture. I love this piece, it is an insight into the artist’s psyche and also has that Jazz Age intensity. Available to view in detail at the website or DM to chat directly with me!

FOR SALE. I love the bright colours and optimism of the Art Deco period. This work wonderfully exemplifies the time with rainbow colours applied in such thick oil paint it is almost sculpture that springs from the canvas. A still life of flowers by the artist Mary Oddie who exhibited in the 1930’s available now! View at the website or DM for all your questions answered.

One ticked off the bucket list! A visit to Knossos the largest palace of the Minoan civilization on the Greek island of Crete. A Bronze Age society that created extraordinary art and architecture, so famous that it spawned the legend of King Minos, the labyrinth and the Minotaur.

FOR SALE. This has everything you would want from a provincial horse portrait! A beautifully depicted horse in a stable setting and even a dog. The painting is by George E Sharpe of Lincoln, a little known provincial animal artist who would have been commissioned by wealthy patrons in the Victorian period to depict their prize specimens. The work is in really good condition and retains the original bird’s eye maple frame. Available to view in detail at the website or open up a dm and let’s have a chat.

An illuminating visit to Wallace Collection in London. It is a collection of not only paintings and fine furniture but also great works in silver. This nineteenth century solid silver camel held my attention for a time, quite extraordinary, I’ve not seen its like before.

FOR SALE. I’ve always liked silhouettes, I’m not sure why, perhaps it’s because they represent real people and there is a great skill in the ex*****on. I really like this one, it’s a very individual profile of a known sitter (Susannah Hyde Gale 1749-1823 the wife of Admiral Alan Gardner, first Lord Gardner 1742-1809.) and painted by a highly regarded silhouette artist Charles Rosenberg of Bath. To cap it off it even has the original frame! What’s not to love. Available to view in detail at the website.

FOR SALE. This will not be to everyone’s taste but I think it’s just wonderful. Art Deco period, it shows a group of ladies chatting and joking. The whole has a green tinge probably to indicate a smokey environment. It appeals to me as it is just so unique and evocative of a time, it is dated 1929. Annoyingly there is an illegible signature but I suspect it is by someone rather good. Available to view in detail at the website.
