Some perfumes announce themselves. Roos & Roos Nymphessence prefers to arrive slowly, the way morning does.

It opens with a burst of pear, mandarin and bergamot, bright and slightly green, before easing into a heart of magnolia, freesia and orange blossom that feels dewy rather than sweet. Some fragrances are polite. Miller Harris Feuilles de Tabac has absolutely no interest in being that.

It opens bright, almost surprisingly so, with pine needles, sage and Italian bergamot, before a spiced, peppery heart of cascarilla oil and pimento berries takes over. Then it settles into what it was always building towards, a warm, full bodied to***co base wrapped in patchouli and tonka bean.

It was inspired by a well dressed Parisian gentleman enjoying the cafe culture of Boulevard St Germain, and honestly, once autumn evenings draw in, that's exactly the mood it puts you in. Classically masculine in feel, but it has just as many devoted fans who'd never call it that.
