Newcastle-under-Lyme has a long history of hat making dating back over 300 years 🎩

To celebrate Heritage Open Days join contemporary Felt Hat Maker Holly Johnson from Hojo Hattery at The Barracks for a live hat making demonstration and family-friendly hat crafting activity.

Browse Holly's hat making materials and equipment, have a go at steaming and shaping a felt hat crown, or just chat and ask
questions about how traditional felt-blocked hats are made.

Holly will be joined by local circus performer and artist Eve Travis, Circus In A Box, who will both help you to create your own cardboard and fabric decorated hat to wear about town and take home.

The Barracks Trust is looking for a creative and experienced web design and development partner to help us create a brand-new website for The Barracks – our beautiful Grade II listed building and thriving enterprise centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

This isn't just about giving the website a fresh look. We want someone to help us tell the story of The Barracks, showcase the fantastic independent businesses based here, promote our community grant programme, and bring the building's fascinating heritage to life through engaging digital content.

If you're a freelancer, creative studio or digital agency with a passion for great design and user experience, we'd love to hear from you.

🎉 We have some exciting news! 🎉

The Barracks Trust is delighted to announce that we have received funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for Back to the Barracks: A New Chapter.

This exciting project will help safeguard The Barracks through the next phase of essential window restoration works.

Alongside the conservation work, we'll be delivering a programme of creative heritage activities, workshops and events that will celebrate the many stories, people and businesses that have shaped The Barracks over the last 170 years.

From its military origins and years as family housing to its current role as a home for independent businesses, artists and makers, The Barracks has always been a place where people come together to live, work and create.

Over the coming months there will be lots of opportunities to get involved, share memories, explore local heritage and take part in creative activities inspired by this remarkable building.

A huge thank you to National Lottery players for making this project possible.

Keep an eye on our page for updates, opportunities to get involved and behind-the-scenes glimpses as we begin this exciting new chapter.

Welcome to Hojo Hattery, Circus In A Box, Emily Andrews from Bontuft and Richard Redwin from Red Things Creations.

B-Arts, who all of the artists have worked with, were based here for several years. Such a nice link.

We hope you’ll all be very happy under the arch 😊

🤩 We’re over the moon The Block - Newcastle under Lyme have come to town!

The Block is an innovative arts studio that advocates for community, inclusivity, and creativity. Four amazing artists all under one roof. We think ‘Castle is about to get a bunch more creative!

Hojo Hattery is bringing hat-making home! Holly creates one-of-a-kind handmade hats. She once created a custom Mountie hat and block shaped like The Barracks building (It feels almost like fate!) Local circus performer, costume maker and artist Eve is bringing her extensive experience to the town! Being part of a circus family, Eve’s parents held circus workshops with their first ever taking place at The Barracks in 1994. She’ll also be holding workshops teaching circus skills, clowning, and more 🤹‍♀️🎪 Say Hi! Circus In A Box👋🏻

That’s not all, The Block is expanding and welcoming rug tufting artist Emily from and giant puppet maker Richard of to the creative space! 🧶🎭
