So as a lot of you all know, I don't typically read romance but when The Sinful Spine opened up, I just had to grab something in support! They didn't have a lot of stock left but I managed to spot this gorgeous cover on the shelf and snapped it up.
And honestly? It was fine! I loved the concept and world building that the book explored and the sci-fi and body/plant horror elements were great! Not terrifying but enough to freak you out a little. The romance was a predictable and a little underwhelming but the author does manage to make it somewhat plot relevant so which is impressive. I had someone explain to me that sometimes people read romance because they are already familiar with the tropes and enjoy the sense of comfort that comes with reading something predictable. While I can totally understand this, I just found it a little frustrating personally. Like you are on an alien planet, surely you have more important things to do than f*ck?
But overall, it was a fun read! I don't think I'm the target audience but I did enjoy it enough that I will probably pick up Thrum (another sci-fi/horror/romance by the same author) the next time I'm in The Sinful Spine!
