A little behind the scenes of how Senyü’s textiles come to life. ✨

The motif featured in this design is the diamond motif, one of the most recognisable motifs found across many Naga textiles. While each community has its own distinctive patterns, motifs, and interpretations, the diamond form appears throughout the rich textile traditions of the Naga people, each carrying its own story and significance.

This carousel takes you through part of the making process, from my initial hand-drawn sketch, to sampling on the loom, refining the motif with the weaver, and finally transforming the woven textile into a cushion.

For me, preserving craft is always a collaborative effort. It takes many skilled hands, shared knowledge the individual expertise, and dedication to bring a beautiful piece to life.

Do leave a like if you have enjoyed this behind the scenes glimpse into the making process 😊

This is Kenye ✨

Kenye started weaving at a young age, learning the craft from her mother who is an expert in nettle fibre making and weaving. She loves experimenting with natural dyes and hand-spun cotton grown locally in Nagaland.

In my culture, weaving isn’t just a craft. It is how identity, heritage and belonging are passed down. From mothers to daughters, generation to generation.

When you buy a piece from Senyü, this is whose hands made it possible. 🤍

When I was in India last winter, I had the chance to refine my own weaving skills with Kenye’s cousin, someone I will be introducing you to in a future post.

For me, working personally with weavers from my region is about so much more than collaboration. It is about sharing the process of keeping our cultural heritage alive.

Backstrap loom weaving is a slow, skilful technique. The loom uses no electricity, no machinery. It is pure skill and time. To try and do it all alone would not only take so long, it would make it much harder to keep the craft alive.

That is why working with weavers from my region matters so much to me. The only way I see this tradition continuing is by coming together, collaborating, and supporting one another so these skills can be carried forward for generations to come.

Bringing this handbag back 😊 it sold out at my very first craft market this year, and I only made two pieces to begin with! 🙌
Chartreuse is the colour of the season and I am here for it 🌿✨

This same tote bag is coming to GNCCF , just 6 pieces, keeping it exclusive as always. Authentically handwoven using an ancient traditional technique on a backstrap loom, rich in culture yet contemporary in style.

Hands up in the comments if you’re loving this colour! 💚 Tag a friend who needs this in their life!

One year ago, in my first year of Senyü, I was awarded Best in Show at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in Newcastle, chosen from over 100 exceptional makers from across the UK. I couldn’t be prouder. 🧡

Senyü creates handwoven textiles using a traditional backstrap loom technique from Nagaland, India an ancient heritage craft passed down through generations, from mothers to daughters. In my culture, weaving is part of everyday life and identity.

I’m so excited to be back this June a standout event in the heart of Newcastle, bringing together the very best in contemporary craft, design and art.

Come find me, come say hello 👋🏽 I can’t wait to see you there. 🧵

Before this bag reaches your hands, it begins like this. 🖤🤍

A weaver in Nagaland, seated at her backstrap loom, threading together something that has been made this way for generations. This is my cultural craft, I weave myself and that is exactly why I collaborate with the weavers because sustaining this tradition means making sure the people who carry it forward can make a living doing so.

Every Sënyucraft piece is made in small batches. Only 6 per design. Not as a marketing strategy but because that is simply the nature of handwoven work. Slow, considered, and made with full attention.

Senyü’s striped tote bags sold out and I’m touched by how many of you fell in love with them. So I am bringing them back. Mostly in the same colours you know and a few new combinations joining them that I can’t wait to show you.

If you’ve visited my markets or shopped with me before and noticed something missing from the website that’s why. When they’re gone, they’re gone. Until I make them again.

One cream and black piece is still with incase you see it there or wanted one for yourself asap 🥲
