From the stable block of Lillie Langtry's former Newmarket home in 1978, Fothergill's began selling seed to garden shops and centres. Today, the company is one of the most respected in the market and we now also supply to international markets and direct to the customer through mail order. The home of Fothergill's still remains at Kentford, Newmarket, although the premises are now significantly different, with purpose built offices, packing and storage buildings. What to sow and plant this October 🌱🍂

October is all about planting now for what comes next. From hardy veg that can get a head start over winter to spring bulbs that will reward you with colour when the warmer days return. 🌷

3 tulip bulb planting mistakes to avoid 🌷

1️⃣ Starting with unhealthy bulbs
Choose firm, healthy bulbs with no signs of mould, softness or damage. A strong spring display starts with a strong, healthy bulb.

2️⃣ Planting them too shallow
Planting bulbs too close to the surface can leave them vulnerable to frost and being disturbed.

3️⃣ Letting them get waterlogged
Bulbs need good drainage. Sitting in wet, waterlogged soil can cause them to rot, so improve heavy soil or make sure containers have plenty of drainage holes.

Save this before you start planting your autumn bulbs for spring. 🌱

On the menu this autumn… Bulb Tiramisu 👨‍🍳🌷

Layers of bulbs, a generous helping of compost and a little patience, all served up with months of spring colour🤌

The idea is simple: Plant different bulbs at different depths in one container, so they can take turns putting on a show as the seasons change.
🌼 Narcissi at the bottom
🌷 Tulips in the middle
💜 Crocus, dwarf iris or snowdrops towards the top
🌸 Finish with pansies, wallflowers or polyanthus for a little colour while you wait

What can an ancient watering technique teach us about gardening today? 🌱💧

We caught up with Leanne at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair to hear the story behind 'The Ophelia Survival Garden' and discovered a clever little feature hidden beneath the soil… Ollas! These traditional terracotta pots are buried in the ground and filled with water, which slowly seeps through the porous clay into the surrounding soil.

After the hot, dry spells we’ve experienced this summer, we loved seeing a centuries-old idea being used to inspire more water-wise gardening today. ☀️🌿 Sometimes the cleverest gardening solutions aren’t new at all!
