Fly season is nearly here and the right sheet makes a real difference to how your horse copes through summer.

A few things worth thinking about before you buy:

Mesh or full cover? A fine mesh sheet is ideal for turnout on warm days, letting air through while keeping flies off. A full neck cover gives more protection for horses who really suffer or who live out, taking it up over the neck and down towards the tail.

Fit matters most. Too big and it slips and rubs, too small and it pulls across the chest and shoulders. Measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the tail, and check the neck sits comfortably without gaping.

When to use which. Light mesh for the field on hot days, a fuller cover for horses prone to sweet itch or those out day and night.

Get the fit and the cover right and most horses settle far more happily through the summer.

That is another month gone, and what a lovely stretch of riding weather to see it out.

Light morning and evenings and horses settled into the summer routine. It is our favourite time of year here in Newmarket.
