Beat the drought and embrace prairie-style planting 🌾☀️

As our summers heat up, thoughtful planting choices are more important than ever. Pip has been busy curating a display of must-have, drought-tolerant favourites, including Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Helenium, Kniphofia, Salvia, Verbena and ornamental grasses.

Beautiful, resilient and made for sunny borders - prairie planting is having a moment. 🌿

We'll also be joined by Alban Hill's own Chris Day, who'll be on hand throughout the event and happy to answer your gardening questions - and not just the veggie-growing kind! So if you've got queries about flowers, shrubs, lawns, pests, or anything else garden-related, come along and have a chat.

We hope to see you there! 🌻

Time to get out into the garden this evening as many areas of the UK will observe (cloud cover allowing) a partial solar eclipse.

Here's some pointers from Star Walk ...
🇬🇧 The UK won’t get totality on August 12, 2026 — but the view should still be spectacular… if the clouds cooperate. 👀

The Moon will cover roughly 88–96% of the Sun across the country, turning it into a thin crescent shortly before sunset. The deepest eclipse will be visible in the southwest.

📌 Save this map for eclipse day and share it with your friends in the UK! Where will you be watching from? 👇

Be aware of the safety aspects of observing a partial eclipse. Do check out some useful tips at this link https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2026/07/23/how-to-watch-the-solar-eclipse-safely-this-summer/

RE-POTTING BAY TREES 🌿

Over the weekend, we received several enquiries about re-potting lollipop bay trees, so we thought we'd share some helpful advice.

Is now a good time to re-pot?
Yes! Bay trees (Laurus nobilis) can be re-potted at any time of the year.

Which compost should you use?
For best results, use a John Innes No. 3 compost mixed with around 10% horticultural grit to improve drainage. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes and add plenty of crocking material at the base before planting.

Do bay trees need any special care after re-potting?
Keep your bay tree well watered while it settles into its new pot. Begin feeding around one month after re-potting using Miracle-Gro once a week. Continue feeding throughout the growing season and stop when you reach October.

A little care at re-potting time will help keep your bay tree healthy, vigorous, and looking its best for years to come. 🌱

Temperatures are set to peak on Thursday so here's a quick reminder on some smart watering techniques we should try to work to ...

💦 Soak, don't sprinkle: Give plants a deep, generous watering less often to encourage strong roots to grow downward rather than staying weak near the surface.
💦 Time it right: Water during the early morning or evening when temperatures are cool to minimise loss from the sun and wind.
💦 Target the roots: Direct your watering can or hose at the soil around the base of the plant instead of spraying the leaves.
💦 Liquid feed rather than use granules as you can target the roots and plants more effectively.
💦 Check the soil: Scrape the earth about an inch deep; if it feels like a wrung-out cloth, your plants have enough moisture.
Finally, practise a rain dance 😉

Have you seen one of these? The hummingbird hawk-moth (correctly known as Macroglossum stellatarum) is a remarkable, day-flying insect named for its uncanny resemblance to a hummingbird. It hovers mid-air while using a long proboscis to drink nectar from flowers, beating its wings up to 80 times per second to create a distinct humming sound. We've spotted a couple on the Nursery and they are simply amazing to watch. However, they are difficult to photograph, so this photo really shows the detail.

Did you know? The hummingbird hawk-moth migrates to the UK from Southern Europe each year.

🌱 Good plants that attract them include Trachelopspermum, red valerian, honeysuckle, buddleja, and Echium vulgare (viper's bugloss).

We have the RHS - Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit Agapanthus ‘Silver Baby’ available.

Don’t be fooled by its size - this dwarf Agapanthus still delivers plenty of impact.

A clump-forming evergreen perennial, ‘Silver Baby’ has dark green, strap-like foliage and delicate white trumpet-shaped flowers, lightly flushed with pale blue at the edges. It flowers through summer.

Growing to around 40–60cm in height and spread, it’s a great choice for patio containers, smaller borders and anyone short on space.

And, just like the larger Agapanthus, it prefers free-draining, gritty compost.

Small plant. Big presence. 🌱
