Whilst everyone sleeps, in the darkest hours of the night, when the stars are out and the Milky Way stretches across the sky, this is my favourite time to capture my images. A silent time when the only sounds are that of the ocean or rustling foliage, a time when your mind can expand and take in the seemingly endless canvas that is the universe above. Here on the Isle of Wight we are very fortunate to have stunning natural landscapes, from the craggy coastlines to the sprawling hills. When combined with a fiery sunset or a backdrop of the night sky it creates a captivating, almost surreal image that seems like something taken from the imagination rather than reality.

Tonight, keep your eyes on the sky.

Wednesday 12th August is set to be a spectacular night for anyone who loves looking up.

It begins in the early evening with a partial solar eclipse, reaching its maximum here on the Isle of Wight at around 7.14pm, when more than 93% of the Sun will be covered.

As darkness falls, the New Moon leaves the skies beautifully dark. For anyone hoping to photograph the stars, this is about as good as it gets. With darker skies, the Milky Way becomes far easier to see.

And then, overnight, the Perseid meteor shower will be at its peak overnight, bringing the chance of shooting stars streaking across the night sky.

A solar eclipse, a New Moon and the peak of the Perseids, all within the same 24 hours.

If the skies are clear, Wednesday night could be one to remember.

If you’re watching the eclipse, remember to use proper solar viewing glasses. Never look directly at the Sun.

As the waters around the Isle of Wight fill with sails once again for Cowes Week, I'm reminded of one of my favourite events to photograph each year - the Round the Island Race.
Seeing hundreds of yachts making their way around the Island is always an incredible sight. Every race brings different weather, different light and a completely different atmosphere, meaning no two years are ever the same.

All of the sailing photographs featured here are available to purchase, along with many more Isle of Wight scenes.

Most of my night photography is planned around the darkest skies possible to chase the Milky Way. But a full moon brings something completely different.

It illuminates the landscape, revealing so much more within the frame.

This night I was lucky enough to capture the full moon rising above The Needles, its warm glow creating a shimmering path across the sea while the white cliffs stood out beautifully beneath it.

This image has also translated beautifully onto one of my glass chopping boards, available in both smooth and textured finishes.

It is extremely rare that I exhibit my work these days due to running the shop, however when Caroline Knox Printmaker kindly asked me to join her at Quarr Abbey, I jumped at the chance! It will be on until Tuesday afternoon… I have several new products on display (some of which you may spot in this photo) to take a closer look! 👀

Every year in July, the annual Round the Island yacht race takes place. What began with just 25 entrants in 1931 has grown into one of the world’s largest yacht races. Starting in Cowes, hundreds upon hundreds of boats set out to circumnavigate the Island, sailing 50 nautical miles through strong tides, shifting winds and incredibly busy waters. Needless to say, the sight of so many boats rounding the Island is something truly spectacular to behold.

Weather permitting, I try to photograph the race every year, always hoping that the timing aligns and that the wind is in the right direction. This image was taken on 1st July 2017. I made my way to the Blackgang Viewpoint car park before walking up onto the cliff top, where there is an uninterrupted view across the Island’s west coast - a sweeping 10 to 12 mile stretch from St.Catherine’s Point all the way through to the Needles.

Just as I settled into position, the main fleet came into view around the Needles. It was an extraordinary sight; countless boats scattered across the water, all moving in unison around the western edge of the Island. It almost seemed impossible that so many vessels could occupy the same stretch of sea at once.

I couldn’t believe my luck that day. The wind shifted to a downwind direction and, one by one, the spinnakers were raised. What had already been a remarkable scene suddenly became something even more striking as the fleet turned into colour in motion.

This image captures the essence of that moment, the seeming impossibility of the scale of the event. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Needles chalk cliffs, the water is cast in shades of turquoise revealing changing depths as the sunlight breaks through the moving clouds overhead. The waters are vast and yet there is a vessel in almost every part of the sea, each representing another crew, a different story unfolding.

I am often asked whether this image is real but everything you see is as it appeared on the day. I also took a panoramic using a long lens panning left to right. This image can be seen below and shows the impressive moment in its entirety. In fact if you look closely at the panoramic you will be able to see the exact section I then chose to photograph.
