Even I need reminding sometimes just how epic my little shop is.

To me, I see the things that need a good sort out… the cleaning, decluttering and organising that needs doing. But to everyone else, Yellow Umbrella Gifts is a little piece of heaven.

It’s filled with amazing, inspiring products, beautiful handmade treasures and so many perfect gift choices from small businesses — and sometimes I need to remind myself that the things I see as a me problem doesn’t stop everyone else from seeing all the beauty.

So, I’m going to try and see it through your eyes a little more.

Because Yellow Umbrella Gifts really is pretty magical.
And here’s a little Yellow fix for you all…

It’s just wonderful to be included in the finals for Best Shop Front! 💛 Newton Abbot Business & Community Awards

Please have a look through our gallery of shop fronts we’ve created including our starting point.

A shop front and window display is so much more than just how a shop looks — it’s will catch the eye of passers-by and invite people into our little gift shop.

We also have to appreciate where we started. Our previous shop front helped us build our identity and welcome our first customers, and then when we were handed the keys to our new shop (only last year), it looked completely different from the warm, inviting space you see today. Seeing the transformation has been such a proud moment.

Just today we sold 8 items from our window display, which means we’ll be busy refilling it tomorrow! We’ve had a local artist create a wonderful piece of artwork for our shop front, I’ve handcrafted giant crackers and bows for Christmas, and there is never any expense spared when it comes to creating something special.

And you’re all in for a treat with our autumn window display and Christmas this year… we might even have a little snow machine surprise coming! ❄️ (Shhh… don’t tell anyone!)

Thank you for seeing the love, creativity and effort that goes into our little yellow corner of Newton Abbot.

July… what a month. 💛

Looking back, we’re feeling incredibly grateful for everything we’ve achieved together.

Positives-
⭐ Hosted our biggest shop event yet, with an amazing pre-Christmas turnout.
⭐ Created our first Christmas in July, which grew into a celebration across the whole of Bank Street.
⭐ Started our weekly Teacake Thursdays.
⭐ Reached 10,000 transactions on our trusty old till before finally giving it a well-earned retirement.
⭐ Welcomed another six wonderful small businesses into the shop.
⭐ Launched our Small Business Sanity Social.
⭐ Celebrated our first ever over five-figure July turnover.
⭐ Welcomed so many new faces through the door who have only just discovered us.

Negatives-
But, as always, there’s the other side of the month too… 😅

❌ Had to buy sooo many bags (we were constantly running out!).
❌ The hottest weather ever, including having to shut one day due to lack of footfall in the heat.
❌ Gave myself whiplash and concussion (ouch).
❌ Ran out of change at the worst possible times.
❌ Sold out of lots of favourites, so it’ll take time to get them back in.
❌ The drains outside do smell a lot sometimes… not ideal in the heat.
❌ A leak downstairs again (but it’s contained — plumber needed if anyone knows one!).
❌ Again… soooo hot. 🥵
❌ Drank too many Red Bulls to keep going. Very bad for my health.

It’s easy to look at a list like this and think it’s all about the milestones, but to us it’s really about the people behind them. Every visit, every purchase, every share, every kind word and every recommendation has helped make these moments possible and keeps us in Newton Abbot.

Each month seems to get a little better than the last, and we never take that for granted. We work hard for what we’ve created and we will continue to keep working hard for you all.

Thank you, Newton Abbot, for continuing to support our little yellow shop, the amazing makers we champion, and all the ideas we bring to life. We truly couldn’t do it without you. 💛

Looking for something epic to do this summer?

Tonight we headed to the Ashcombe Slip N Slide, and it was such a brilliant evening! The atmosphere was relaxed, the slides were so much fun, and it made for the perfect way to spend a summer evening.

The pizzas were absolutely delicious too – and really reasonably priced! 🍕

We had such a great time that we will be booking to go back next Thursday for their Foam Party again!

If you’re looking for something different to do with family or friends, we’d definitely recommend giving it a go.

What’s all this Small Business stuff about?

Strip away all the noise, the business jargon, and the comparisons, and at the end of the day, this is who we are: a simple, passionate, independent gift shop in Newton Abbot.

We are proud to be the original home of handmade here, opening our doors back in 2023. Over the last three years, we’ve taken an incredible journey. We’ve evolved, changed the way we operate, and made big decisions along the way—and we absolutely love what this shop has turned into today.

It shouldn’t matter how, what, or why we do what we do or how we run our own shop and it definitely shouldn’t be a focus for others. What truly matters is that when you walk through our doors, you are keeping a small, local, independent business alive and thriving in a massive world dominated by online, mass-produced sales.

We are so lucky to house over 100 incredible small UK businesses within our walls, including 60 fantastic local makers. We’re here to give you a real small-business shopping experience—where you can physically touch the products, chat with a real human being, and feel that personal connection.

We aren’t trying to impress anyone or play games. We’re just here doing what we love, bringing you wild ideas, and pouring our hearts into this space. Thank you for loving us for who we are, supporting all our crazy ideas, and walking this journey with us.

So let’s just celebrate all independents and the customers who choose to keep us open by shopping with us!

CLOSED TODAY (Tuesday 28th July)

Unfortunately, the shop will be closed today.

I managed to injure myself over the weekend and, after spending several hours in A&E yesterday, I’ve been told I need to rest today.

I’m so sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We plan to be back open as normal tomorrow.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported all of us on Bank Street today. ❤️

Here’s little snippets of the first couple hours, after this was a blur.

We had an absolute blast, and thanks to you, every business was kept wonderfully busy. The festive drinks and delicious food went down a treat, and seeing so many people enjoying themselves made the day so special.

Your support means more than you know. It’s a really challenging time for small businesses, so days like today remind us exactly why we keep going. You make all the hard work worthwhile, and we’re incredibly grateful for every visit, every purchase, every smile, and every kind word.
