Last in our silicone survival guide, but certainly not least, is Soudal Silirub 2 🟠

Silirub 2 is a premium quality, low modulus, neutral cure silicone that provides the flexibility needed for outdoor bird spike installations.

Because it remains elastic after curing, it can accommodate movement caused by changing temperatures and different building materials, helping to reduce the risk of cracking or the spike base becoming detached.

Its thick bodied formula offers excellent workability, while its neutral curing system is virtually odourless and non corrosive. It also provides primerless adhesion to many common building surfaces.

A lovely September Installer of the Month entry, from Algoclear Exterior Cleaning Services .

This summer, the team completed a substantial bird proofing project at a local school where pigeons had gained access beneath the solar panels and begun nesting. They were also perching along the gutter edges, leaving droppings and mess on the path below.

AlgoClear first ensured the solar panel array was clear underneath before fitting an impressive 80 metres of Defender Jaws® around the full solar panel perimeter to prevent the pigeons from getting back underneath. The Jaws simply lock onto 30mm or 35mm with no need for any additional silicone adhesive or clips, creating a strong UV stabilised barrier which will last for years.

They also installed 90 metres of Defender Wide Plastic Spikes along the gutters to stop birds perching above the paths, a favourite perching point for pigeons. The birds cause slippery, hazardous and unhealthy piles of droppings on the paths and play areas, not ideal for a school. As clips couldn’t be used in this situation, they used the cross-shaped holes in the Defender base to securely screw the strips into position.

The project was finished with a thorough solar panel clean and a clean of the path below, leaving the school looking much cleaner and properly protected.

What does a soft and cuddly shark have to do with solar panel bird proofing? 🦈

It all comes down to the teeth.

The great white shark in Jaws is famous for its formidable set of razor sharp teeth, and Defender Jaws® Solar Panel Excluders have some rather clever teeth of their own.

Our next September Installer of the Month entry comes from Beekind Pest Control Pest Control, with a thorough solar panel proofing job using Defender Jaws®. Just watch the fab video!

Every three months. That is how often this homeowner was paying to have their gutters cleaned because of the pigeons living beneath their 14 solar panels.

Along with the cost came the constant noise, day and night, which had reached the point where it was making life at home miserable.

This video shows exactly what can accumulate when pigeons are allowed to live beneath a solar array. After checking carefully to make sure there were no nests, the team fitted Defender Jaws® around the panels using the 35 mm side of the reversible strips.

Jaws® locks securely onto the panel frames without drilling, adhesive or damage to the panels, creating a simple but effective barrier that prevents pigeons from getting back underneath.

The installation was only part of the job. Working safely from scaffolding allowed the team to remove the gutters completely, empty out an entire bag of guano and clean beneath the roof tiles. A biocide treatment was applied before the fouling was removed, helping to reduce the risks from harmful particles becoming airborne during cleaning.

The result is a thoroughly cleaned roof, clear gutters and a solar array that pigeons can no longer call home.

Our next September Installer of the Month entry comes from Jordan ‘Sharkey’ Simmons of JS Services , with a solar panel proofing job completed in Hopton 📍

The property already had mesh fitted around the solar panels, but sections had started to come away from the frames, creating gaps that allowed pigeons to gain access underneath once again.

Jordan removed the old proofing system and made sure the entire area beneath the panels was clear before installing Defender Jaws® around the complete perimeter of the array.

With no silicone adhesive, separate clips or additional components required, Jaws® provides a quick and straightforward installation. The reversible strip locks securely onto both 30 mm and 35 mm solar panel frames, creating a strong barrier around the array.

Made from black UV stabilised polycarbonate, the finished system also looks incredibly smart and discreet, becoming barely noticeable from ground level.

A super job by Jordan, leaving the pigeons firmly locked out and the customer with a much more secure solution.

Apologies for the slightly late start to our September Installer of the Month entries. Staff holidays are to blame - who knew we were allowed them! 😄

We are kicking things off with a brilliant entry from Chris Woollam, Gareth Tonen at Nurture Pest Control, who have installed Defender® Wide Stainless Steel Spikes across several areas of a school.

Schools can present notoriously tricky bird problems, partly thanks to our lovely, but sometimes rather messy, children! Breaktimes and lunchtimes outside inevitably lead to dropped food, providing pigeons with an easy and reliable feeding opportunity.

Encouraging children not to drop food is the ideal starting point, but proofing the birds’ favourite perching places can also make a considerable difference.

The team installed our Wide Stainless Steel Spikes around the roofline and along the parapet walls. This still allows birds to land on the main roof, but prevents them from sitting directly on the edges and fouling the paths and areas below.

Chris knows exactly how bird spikes should be positioned, and this installation is a perfect example. The outer pins slightly overlap the leading edge, ensuring pigeons cannot gain even the smallest foothold.

The window ledges have been protected with a single row, while the larger, wider areas feature several interlocking rows, leaving no gaps or inviting spaces between them.

Here we have Abi and Davy deep in conversation at Defender HQ. They could be discussing a customer’s particularly awkward bird problem, checking stock, considering another new product idea or deciding whose turn it is to make the tea. We may never know.

Kurt’s installation really stood out for its careful workmanship, neat finish and effectiveness. We also loved the personality and humour he brought to his entry.

His winning Defender Jaws® installation received the ultimate real life test when the pigeons returned to inspect his work. Once they discovered their access beneath the solar panels had been completely blocked, they even flew away and came back with reinforcements! 🐦
