Match day 8 report

Saturday 15th August rolled around quickly for the boys from the club and off to cushendun we went for match day 8!

Everybody arrived nice and early, beach was pegged, plenty of craic could be heard in the car park, peg draw done and dusted and off down the beach for a short walk we went, beach was pegged with 6 pegs to the left of the entrance and the rest to the right, we had 14 anglers plus a guest make the trip so another great turn out

Fishing 7-12 conditions looked perfect for a doggie match!! 7pm came and with everybody eager to get off to a fast start baited hooks hit the water

In zone A Gavin on peg 4 got off to a flyer landing nice big chunky flounders, Raymond and Craig on peg 1 and 2 also got a few early fish recorded along with Andy on peg 3, Stevie m on peg 5 was enjoying another day on the beach also with a few fine early fish!! Stephen k on peg 6 though had drawn a peg “full of w**d”

In zone B fra on peg 14 had a great start too with double counters from the off the fishing seemed to be a tad slower in zone B Bert on peg 13 was enjoying his fishing also and his scorecard was proof of that!! As darkness fell everyone’s intentions where turning to dogs, an early dog make an appearance with Craig landing one fishing for flounders! Gavin also pulled an early dog, then bang the place exploded once daylight left, nice sized coalies, po***ck, flounders, rockling and dogs where coming in thick and fast

Yuki in zone B was in his element after not having a sniff in daylight he surely made up for it in the dark pulling the dogs 2 and 3 at a time Marc on the adjoining peg from yuki was having some fun too landing dog after dog

12am came and it was lines in and off to the car park I don’t think Raymond and ally enjoyed counting the score cards though 😂😂

A big thank you to yuki and Tommy for supplying the cream buns for this comp !!

It was clear to see on the night just how much everybody has progressed in the club which is what it’s all about pushing each other on to do better 👏🏻

Scorecards counted and here are the results

Longest fish Fra Mahoney with a 66cm Huss

1st Gavin Mahaffy 28 counters = 1095 points

Master angler leg 7 qualifier report

The much eagerly anticipated match 7 rolled around, this was a new one for the krakens we decided this year due to the vastly growth to the club there are a few venues we can’t get onto I.e cushendall beach and glenarm this was part of the reason we decided as a club to zone our matches to allow these kind of matches to happen

The recorder last week done a live draw through our group chat to determine which beach which angler would be on. This was leg 1 with the return leg being in December, which ever beach you fished the first time then on the return leg you will be on the opposite beach

Zone A was on cushendall peg draw done at 6pm with lines in at 7pm fishing was very good from the off with several anglers landing fish on the first cast, ally nicholl on peg 5 was off to a great start, Craig on peg 1 was also off to a great start and at one point could barely keep up with the fish, Neil on peg 3 also had 4 fish out in no time, rumour has it Andy on peg 6 however didn’t have a fish until Craig had 8 fish on his card, Raymond on peg 2 was steadily building his card in typical fashion

At the half way point Craig had 15 flats and 2 unders on his card, ally Nicholl had around the same amount, however as the light started to fade a few anglers where thinking this could be a doggie match!! Raymond by this time had notched his card up to 16 fish!!, we think he was having a personal battle with himself to see how many different species he could land 😂😂, Stephen m was landing his fish quietly trying to sneak under the radar 😂😂

Fast forward to lines in at 12am we all headed to the car park for the usual craic and banter, on reflection it was a great night on cushendall we where eagerly waiting to hear how zone B had fished

Zone B was on glenarm with the beach pegged and the pegs drawn everybody was hoping to get that peg ( the hot spot 😂) and would you believe it yuki had drawn it!!

Lines in at 7pm several anglers where landing counting fish from the off!! David jnr, Stephen k and yuki being a few that where on them! At the half way point it was close between David Jnr and Stephen k with only 1 fish separating them!! Hot on there tails was yuki, Bert on peg 1 then got in on the fun landing a couple of nice flounder, Gavin then was more than pleased to bring in his first counting fish of the competition, Tommy then added another flat to his score card along with Ryan along with a lobster 😂😂

David fishing for flounders at 20 yards couldn’t believe his luck when he landed a dog 😂, the dogs showed up in numbers with everybody on the beach recording them in there cards, last cast big Stephen k landed a Huss 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Upto the car park at 12am for a quick count to see who had it in the bag!

Results are as follows

ZONE A
1st Ally Nicholl 21 counters + 5 unders = 711 points
2nd Craig Henderson 19 counters + 2 unders = 573 points
3rd Raymond McCann 20 counters = 500 points

ZONE B
1st Stephen Kinning 14 counters = 492 points
2nd yuki 13 counters +1 under = 448 points
3rd David Rainey 12 counters + 1 under = 423 points

Species caught. Flounders, dabs, plaice, turbot, dogs, whiting, po***ck, gunard and pouting

Biggest fish was Stephen k with 45cm Huss

Needless to say it was a roaring success with all anglers!! 🎣🎣

Just a personal note as we do from time to time I’d like to take this opportunity to say how far Stephen m has came this year! Proving that if you put the time and effort in progress will definitely be made!! Well done Stephen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

A big thank you to Stephen k and Andy for supplying the cream buns

See you all at the next one tight lines!! 🎣🎣🎣🇧🇩

Saturday 18th July report

Saturday 18th July meant it was match day 6 for the krakens

We headed to the longfields wall for this one, this is very much a marmite venue you either love it or hate it, leading upto the match the craic was mighty on the group chat with several anglers claiming to have fresh peeler crab, some members however stayed silent 😂😂

Everybody arrived for 3pm expect a straggler mentioning no names (newry flyer) 😂😂. Pegs where drawn everybody’s coolbox stayed firmly closed until it was time to bait up 🤐🤐

12 anglers made the trip and when 4pm came around leads where sent into the horizon, with conditions looking fairly good with good colour in the water and a light to moderate wind breeze most where confident there would be a few fish about as the match approached the half way point though it was clear this was going to be another scratchy competition, the club committee made the decision 2 years ago to point sliver eels to 30 points per eel as these are a protected species and reduce the handling and speed of getting them back into the water

In zone A Raymond Fish whisperer McCann got off to a solid start landing a flounder and eel, Craig on peg 6 was also off to a good start with a few fish on his card however not much else was happening in Zone A

In zone B it was pretty much the same story Andy on peg 12 had an undersize flounder early on, Stephen m on peg 8 had a couple of fish and that was the height of it at the half way stage

Fishing 1.5 hours down and the rest up the second half of the match produced a few more fish but it wasn’t great overall

In zone A Raymond added to his tally on peg 1, newry flyer on peg 2 landed an eel and a flounder, Stephen k on peg 3 landed a double eel which was quickly followed by a counting flounder, Bert on peg 4 was glad to see 2 nice flounders, David snr on peg 5 had no such joy however he claimed he didn’t want to catch a fish anyway 😂 Craig on peg 6 also added another 2 flounders and a eel

Onto zone B Ryan on peg 7 on his first appearance at longfields done well landing 2 eels and a nice flounder, Stephen m on peg 8 who was leading the zone at the half way point added to his bag with what would win the longest fish of the day a 32cm flounder, he claims however he didn’t see the bite and thought the w**d pulled him slack 😂, ally on peg 9 in typical fashion kept knocking in the door and almost took the zone out, he dropped a couple of eels which cost him, Gavin on peg 10 had a great finish landing 2 eels in the last 15/20 mins, David jnr just fresh back from his holidays on peg 11 had a flounder but in typical longfields fashion the fish just didn’t switch on his peg or on Andy’s peg on 12 who was unable to add to his previous undersize fish

9pm came around more quickly for some than others but I think it’s safe to say everybody was glad it was time to get back to the cars for a quick count up of the cards and a bun , buns for this match where kindly donated by Stephen m thanks again buddy 👏🏻👏🏻

Before we get to the results a quick mention to Raymond, Andy and David snr for carrying Craig’s gear to and from his peg, as always it’s great to see fellow anglers helping disabled anglers 👏🏻👏🏻
Zone A
1st Craig Henderson 6 fish for 157 points
2nd Raymond McCann 4 fish for 97 points
3rd Stephen Kinning 3 fish for 93 points
Zone B
1st Gavin Mahaffy 5 fish for 150 points
2nd Ally Nicholl 4 fish for 131 points
3rd Stephen Mcgarrell 4 fish for 129 points

Biggest fish -Stephen m 32cm flounder

Well done everybody on a very tough days fishing and for sticking it out! We will see you all at the next one!! 🎣🎣🎣

Match day 5 report

After a fairly miserable 3/4 weeks weather wise with winds and rain everybody who was making the trip to our annual away day match to arklow where pleasantly surprised with a scorcher of a day on Saturday

Some members couldn’t contain themselves and arrived 3.5 hours early at the venue I’m mentioning no names 🤐😂, as anglers arrived at the car park for the 3pm meet up the banter was great as usual until we got a phone call 3 members who where travelling together had broken down in swords

Thankfully the lads where able to get back home a few down sides though they weren’t able to get to fish and the cream buns never made it to arklow 😂 seriously though the main thing is everybody got home safe and sound

Back to arklow yuki pegged the beach to the left hand side of the slip the peg draw was done and off we went! You really couldn’t have asked for a better day to be out on a beach fishing with temperatures into the 20s it was glorious 4.30 came around vastly and leads hit the horizon

Zone A Gavin on peg one landed the first fish in his zone A a doggie lovely for the scorecard then Stephen k got in on the action landing a smoothie which was the target species for most

Meanwhile in zone B Craig on the other end peg enjoyed back to back dogs on his first and second cast, Tommy on the adjoining peg then got a dog and a lovely 86cm hound , fra then got a dog and a clunker of a hound measuring in at 89cm, Pamela on the adjoining peg was enjoying being back out and lapping up the sun 😂

Back to zone A Ryan, Gavin Eugene and the two stevies where landing a variety of species but not in good numbers unfortunately, however there was tope, hounds, dogs, flounder etc so a good mixture

last cast mayhem saw several anglers landing fish along the beach none more important than the dog fish tommy landed guaranteeing a zone 1st 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Lines in at 9.30 and again a great sight to see with everybody lending a hand to fellow anglers helping getting there gear off the beach back to the car park for a quick count of the cards ( it didn’t take long unfortunately the fish didn’t turn up in numbers )

Species caught: dogs, hounds, tope, whiting, flounder, dabs and tub gunard

ZONE A
1st Stephen Kinning 7 fish for 357 points
2nd Gavin Mahaffy 5 fish for 250 points
3rd yuki 4 fish for 200 points

ZONE B
1st Tommy Carnegie 3 fish for 191 points
2nd Fra Mahoney 3 fish for 167 points
3rd Craig Henderson 4 fish for 154 points

Longest fish on the night was won by fra with a 89cm hound 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Master angler leg 4 qualifying report

As the bank holiday weekend rolled around for most people would of been making plans to spent time with the families but not the krakens club members 🎣🎣

Saturday night was the latest planned qualifying leg for the master angler and Ballycastle was the venue fishing 6-11 we had heard recent reports of this venue fishing very poorly but when we all arrived the beach looked in good shape with a few rollers hitting the shore line

Abit of craic was had before the peg draw as per usual and with the beach pegged it was time for the draw, some people looked happier than others with there pegs ( mentioning no names ) 🤣🤣

Shout out to the two davids and Neil for helping get club member Craig’s gear to his peg with a lengthy walk to peg 4 with the soft sand and shingle, lines hit the horizon at 6pm and there was fish turning up in first casts for a few as the match progressed the sea got choppy and it was proving difficult to hold bottom causing a few tangles with adjoining anglers

In zone A Fish whisperer McCann was plucking a few fish steadily he seemed to have figured out what bait and rig was working, meanwhile in zone B David on end peg was on the fish also, back to zone A fra and Paul where getting a few fish on there cards, ally and Craig on adjoining pegs where finding it tough to even get a single fish, Neil and Gavin where also in on the action and ofcourse the man of the minute yuki was doing his thing

ZONE B lost two anglers early ( I don’t blame them ) as they headed to the car and off home it was that kind of night for some! Marc was getting a few fish although he wouldn’t tell his secrets as to what was working 😶, Andy couldn’t hide his pleasure either after missing a couple of club matches , the two stevies ( new bromance ) had a few fish coming in also with Stephen m securing a hard fought 4th place in the zone 👏🏻👏🏻

11pm came quicker for some than others 🫣 lines in and back to the cars for the all important results and cream buns 🤤😋

Quick note again a big thank you on behalf of Craig to Andy, David snr and Neil for taking his gear off the beach

A big thank you to Marc for supplying the buns who in turn nominated Raymond to supply them at the next match

Results on the night
ZONE A
1st yuki 6 counters for 212 points
2nd Gavin Mahaffy 6 counters for 172 points
3rd Raymond McCann 6 counters for 145 points

ZONE B
1st David Rainey 11 counters for 258 points
2nd Andrew Mc Callion 8 fish for 187 points
3rd Marc Wilson 7 fish for 171 points

Biggest fish on the night was Stephen Mcgarrell with a 27cm flounder

Recorders report
2 hours up rest down
Weather: showers with light winds
Sea state was reasonable swells with no w**d
15 anglers fished
Species caught : flounder, turbot, dogs

Well done to David who won the beach outright and it seems there’s no stopping yuki at the minute 👀👀

Next match is arklow next month see you all then 🎣🎣🎣
