19th of September is the Day of Gula, the Mesopotamian goddess of healing and pregnancy. She is also called Ninkarrak the Herb Grower, so she knows how to use herbs both in cookery and healing. She Creates life in the land, she knows how to make the bare earth bring forth its bounty.
Gula's symbols are the constellation of Lyra and images of dogs. Dogs lived in many healing temples, their licking was said to be healing - and this has also been confirmed by scientists within the last few years. Gula will also give magical dreams, both of healing and also foretelling the future.
However when roused she does have a temper, her anger makes the heavens and Earth tremble, so she is invoked for cursing too.

18th of September is St Joseph of Cupertino's Day. He is the patron saint of aviation and astronauts and those wanting to pass their exams.
He was said to be very unclever but somehow had a knack of passing his exams, he was said to only be asked questions which he knew the answers for, something all exam takers hope for.
He was also said to be prone to ecstatic visions during which he levitated and even flew about. Levitation was said to be a sign of Witchcraft, so he was reported to the Inquisition and kept under observation by them for nearly 20 years.

17th of September is the Feast of Het-Hor, or Hathor, the Egyptian Goddess of the home, pregnancy, childbirth, love, music, dancing, charm, charisma and so much more.
Hathor is an ancient goddess, and may well have been worshipped in pre-dynastic times. Het-Hor is almost certainly not her original name as it means House or Dynasty of Horus, and was probably given to her to bring her into the family of the newer gods.
She had many titles including:
Lady of the Universe, Sky Storm, You From The Land of Silence, Red-Hair, Lady of the House of Jubilation and my favourite Lady of Turquoise.
Hathor is the Mistress of Mirror Magic. We are told that she created a shield which she polished into a magic mirror. One side was called the Power of Ra and allowed the viewer to see far into the distance, or view whoever or wherever they wished over any distance and through time too.
The other side of the mirror showed the true face of the viewer which only the very pure, or the very brave, could look at without flinching.

16th of September We remember St Edith of Wilton a 10th century saint with a taste for bling.
Her mother Wulfthryth, was a lady of noble birth who became a nun at Wilton Abbey. However the local king Edgar fancied Wulfryth and carried her off from the nunnery by force. They were together for over a year, during which time Wulfryth gave birth to a daughter, Edith.
Wulfryth returned to her Abbey with Edith and was made the Abbess. Edgar supported the Abbey giving them both gold and land and was obviously on good terms with Wulfryth.
As the daughter of the Abbess - and a king - Edith was indulged, even after becoming a novice in her mother's Abbey at the age of 14. She liked to wear special gold coloured robes and was rebuked by the local bishop Aethelwold of Wi******er.
But Edith was not one to take that meekly and replied to the Bishop that only God knew the character of a person, 'For pride may exist under the garb of wretchedness and a mind may be as pure under these vestments as under your tattered furs.'
Edith was only 23 when she died and was quickly declared a saint.

15th of September is the feast of the Norse Goddess Var or Vor.
She is the goddess of contracts, including marriage, vows and oaths. Her name means something like, pledge, contract or even 'beloved'.
Her symbol is the oath ring, which were exchanged by people to mark and bind a promise or contract. We still do this at wedding ceremonies, where rings are given and received.
She is also said to carry a distaff and spindle with which she spins threads to bind together those who have made promises.
Var can be invoked to punish those who have broken their word - but beware as she may also investigate your own broken promises!
If you do wish to invoke her, or ask forgiveness for your own failings she likes sweet smelling offerings, flowers, incense, perfume.

14th of September is Holy Cross Day, or Holy Rood Day. This celebrates the day that St Helen is said to have found the true cross, ie the cross which Jesus died on.
Rood is an Old English word and at one time was the only word used to indicate the cross of crucifixion.
Many old churches have a carved Rood Screen, which separates the main body of the church from the holiest part where the altar stands.

13th of September I dont know what went wrong yesterday, I wrote a piece about the Star Goddess Astraea but is seems not to have shown up. I hope this one does!
Today is Roald Dahl Day, celebrating the life and works of this wonderful writer.
He was born today in 1916 in Llandaff near Cardiff. He was a fighter pilot during WWII and later became an intelligence officer based in Washington DC. He said that his role was to learn about how Eisenhower thought in order to help Churchill get on with him.
Dahl wrote his first book 'The Gremlins' based on the RAF folklore that anything that mysteriously went wrong with their planes was the work of a special breed of fairy folk, known as Gremlins.
He wrote many other stories both for children and adults - most people will have read at least one of them. But he was not afraid to include dark and sometimes frightening twists, particularly in the TV series for adults, 'Tales of the Unexpected'.

11th of September Melkum Addis Amet! Happy New Year in Amharic, the language of Ethiopia.
The Ethiopians have a unique calendar of 13 months. 12 months have 30 days and the 13th month has 5 or 6 days depending on whether it is a leap year.
Today is the first day of the month of Meskerem and the first day of the year. It is the feast of Enkutatash, which means 'Gift of Jewels' and celebrates the day the Queen of Sheba arrived back from her visit to King Solomon. The jewels are the gifts Solomon gave her and also the flowers and gifts her people presented to her on her return.
This festival is celebrated with flowers, specifically a bright yellow daisy like flower which flowers abundantly at this time and a special stew.

10th of September 1801 Marie Laveau was born.
She is probably the most famous of all Voodoo practitioners and made a living as a hairdresser and magical practitioner, living all her life in New Orleans.
Her tomb is well visited in the city cemetary where she still receives petitions for help.

9th of September According to Chase's Calendar of Events, today celebrates 'Wonderful Weirdos: Nothing is as dull as being normal, boring and average. Celebrate being weird .... and encouraging weirdness.'
Weird was originally a word which meant something like having the ability to control destiny. The Norse Goddesses of Fate, the three Norns were said to control the Weird of everyone through their magical abilities.
Later weird or wyrd was applied to anyone who had magical or supernatural abilities. Shakespeare famously used it to describe the three Witches in 'Macbeth' as Weird Sisters. Terry Pratchett also used the term as a book title to describe a coven of three Witches, Magrat, Nanny Ogg and the formidable Esme Weatherwax.
To me 'weirdness' expresses the ability to see beyond the confines of convention and acceptebiltiy and perhaps even to live beyond or outside of the bonds of the social norm.
To a lot of people, being a Witch is a bit weird, to me it is normal. So for me being Wyrd is the new normal :)
