Putting the caravan away for winter? Don’t forget the leisure battery.

Even when your caravan isn’t being used, alarms, trackers and other 12V systems can continue drawing power in the background. Left unchecked for a long period, that can leave the battery at a low state of charge and potentially shorten its useful life.

Before storage, check the battery’s condition, terminals and connections, and make sure it’s at the manufacturer’s recommended storage charge. For longer periods off the road, disconnecting the battery can also help prevent unnecessary drain, just remember this may disable alarms, trackers or other security systems, so check your caravan setup first.

Charge it. Check it. Maintain it.
A little attention now can make getting back on the road in spring much easier.

Your tent’s going in the loft for six months… but how you pack it away matters too.
The way you squeeze a tent into the car for a weekend away doesn’t necessarily need to be the way it spends the entire winter.

Give it some room.
If you have the storage space, keep your tent more loosely packed rather than tightly compressed in the smallest possible bag for months. This helps avoid unnecessary pressure being placed on the fabric while it’s sitting in storage.

Think about the folds.
Pay attention to where the harder fittings end up when packing. Metal pins, rings and other fittings shouldn’t be trapped randomly between layers where they could spend months pressing into the flysheet. Positioning them together and packing carefully helps reduce potential pressure points.

Consider removing the inner.
If your tent has a detachable inner, removing it can make the main tent easier to organise and gives you the opportunity to make sure both sections are completely clean and dry before storage. Depending on your tent, this can also make looser long-term storage easier.

Keep pegs and poles separate.
Clean them thoroughly, make sure they’re completely dry and store them separately from the tent fabric where possible. You don’t want dirty, damp or potentially corroding metal sitting against the material for several months.

And completely dry really does mean completely dry.
Pay attention to corners, folds, groundsheets and other areas that can hold onto moisture. Packing a damp tent away for long periods can encourage mildew and deterioration.
The goal isn’t simply to make your tent fit into the smallest possible space. It’s to pack it in a way that helps it come back out in the best possible condition next season.
