Beaks really are a wonder of nature, made from a bony lightweight core and covered with a tough outer layer of keratin – the same material that makes up our fingernails and hair. The bone is responsible for shape and strength while the keratin protects the bone and forms the cutting, probing, cracking and gripping surfaces.

Keratin never stops growing but is worn down naturally with feeding , preening and other regular activities. Unlike our teeth, birds don’t actually chew their food as digestion is completed further down in the digestive system, particularly in the muscular gizzard. Different garden birds have evolved different beak shapes depending on what they eat.
When you’re next watching birds on the feeder, home in on their beaks and you’ll spot a distinct difference between each species.

National grid are doing work on the substation today which means we have intermittent power so no phones or card payments. Carwash is closed. Tearoom is closed. Garden centre and Fish And Pond Centre Northampton are open but limited services and a little dark. Should all be back on tomorrow.
