A great example of partnership working getting results

A prolific thief has been issued with a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order after he persistently targeted four retailers in the Duston area of Northampton.

The order was granted by Northampton Magistrates’ Court on July 23, following a successful application by Northamptonshire Police’s Anti-Social Behaviour and Civil Order Team.

Simon Boswell, aged 44, of Candace Court, Northampton, was made subject of the order after he appeared in front of magistrates to be sentenced after he pleaded guilty to 16 offences of theft from shops at the same court on July 1.

Over a two-month period, between April 26 and June 26 this year, Boswell targeted the One Shop in Main Road, Duston, stealing more than £2,290 worth of items including alcohol, confectionary, meat, cheese, coffee, ci******es, household products, and toiletries.

In addition to the Criminal Behaviour Order, Boswell was also sentenced to a 12-month community order and tag monitoring with exclusions matching the order, three-month drug rehabilitation requirement, and 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

Anti-social Behaviour Sergeant Grace Manwaring of Northamptonshire Police said: “Simon Boswell is a persistent shoplifter who has targeted the same stores repeatedly and when staff have challenged him, he has often responded with abusive and threatening behaviour.

"His actions have caused fear and upset for shop workers and customers alike. We hope the Criminal Behaviour Order will help protect retail staff, who have the right to work in a safe environment without fear of crime.

"Northamptonshire Police will use all available powers to tackle offenders like Boswell. The fact that he has also been sent to prison shows that this kind of behaviour has serious consequences.

"By publishing details of the order and his photograph, we want retail staff and the public to understand the restrictions he must follow. If anyone sees Boswell breaking the conditions, we ask them to report it to us straight away by calling 101 so we can take appropriate action.”

This criminal behaviour order states Boswell must not:

• Enter any Northamptonshire One Stop Shop, Co-op, Tesco or Marks & Spencer stores
• Enter Main Road or Limehurst Square, Duston as per the map provided for any reason
• Enter Sixfields, Upton as per the map provided for any reason
• Enter Northamptonshire premises from which he has been banned or excluded from
• Remain on any premises in Northamptonshire when he has been asked to leave by staff or any person with authority to make such a request
• Behave in a manner which he knows or ought to know is likely to cause annoyance, alarm or distress to any person in Northamptonshire

If Boswell fails to comply with the Criminal Behaviour Order, he risks being arrested and prosecuted further.

If things get reported, things get done. We are aware that there is cynicism amongst some that "nothing gets done" which in turn means nothing gets reported. Through DISC and our anti-social behaviour reporting schemes, we make it easy to report retail crime and ASB, which in turn means action is then taken by the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and other authorities.

A 51-year-old man has been issued with a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) following persistent anti-social behaviour and begging in Corby town centre.

The order was granted by Northampton Magistrates’ Court on May 7, following a successful application by Northamptonshire Police.

Mark Weems, of Dorking Walk, Corby, was made subject of the order following complaints to the Corby Neighbourhood Policing Team about his aggressive behaviour when begging.

This behaviour included becoming aggressive and intimidating towards members of the public who declined to give him money as well as loitering around cash machines waiting for some of the most vulnerable members of the community to use them.

He also became verbally abusive when asked to move away from businesses and retailers, which caused further distress and alarm to those visiting and working in the town centre area.

This criminal behaviour order states Weems must not:

• Enter Corby town centre and Willow Place Shopping Centre where he has already been given a banning notice from
• Approach persons and ask for money (including food, money or material goods) in any street, road, public place or place to which the public have access to within Northamptonshire
• Enter any premises which he is banned or excluded from within Northamptonshire
• Remain on any premises when asked to leave by a member of staff or persons with authority to make such request within Northamptonshire.

If Weems fails to comply with the Criminal Behaviour Order, he risks being arrested and prosecuted further.

Fantastic article in Northampton Chronicle last week about the great work done by the Retail Crime Team in partnership with ourselves. We are lucky in Northants to have such a strong relationship with Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire OPFCC and are the envy of many. We love recognising the outstanding work that our retailers do and here are another two examples of that. Elaine is a Corby "Superspotter" who has a fantastic reputation for identifying offenders and supporting Northamptonshire Police in the prosecution of offenders. She is also top of the class when communicating with other retailers in Corby using the Disc App Instant Messenger.
Over in Northampton, Paul, for many years has supported the NBCP with numerous and regular identifications of prolific and priority offenders and is always willing to provide quality evidence. The commitment of Elaine, Paul and others is what's making a difference in Northamptonshire and we are delighted to award them our both our "Certificate Of Excellence".
