The Green Room

The Green Room Guitar service and repair The Green Room: an artists refuge; a place to get cleaned up, make last minute set adjustments and get prepared to smash the show.

Well, to play at their best, your stringed instruments need to be properly prepared as well. ANY guitar, from a £3000 top-end strat to a £100 starter guitar can benefit from a proper set up - the factory do not know how you want your guitar to play and cheaper guitars only get a very rudimentary set up before shipping. So for a relatively small sum of money, why not get a pro setup to really get t

he best performance and the most enjoyable experience from your shiny new guitar. And what about your old faithful; the guitar that's been with you for years and played the last hundred shows? Well, it now has pitted frets, intonation issues, a worn nut and probably other problems that prevent it from playing it's best. Let's face it, at this point it's EARNED a little TLC (not the 90's girl group!) Or maybe it's time for a change - new pickups, higher/lower value pots or a mod (not Paul Weller!)

Not gig ready yet? Still learning your craft? Well, you'll want to put those hundreds of practice hours in on a guitar that's nice to play! A small investment early on can make all the difference when getting through that blistered fingers stage. So come visit the Green Room workshop or give me a call to discuss how to get the best out of your guitars

Time to catch on socials again!

Brand new squier 60's vibe Jaguar needed plenty of modding. The customer wanted a single coil scratchplate changed to fit humbuckers. The neck was swapped from the chunky 60's C it came with to one with a slimmer, more modern profile which also required fitting new machine heads and dressing the frets. Lastly a good setup and she was ready to go!

Over time, string tension can pull the body of an acoustic guitar upwards and change the angle of the bridge; This can cause an impossibly high playing action, poor tone and other issues.

Having a bridge doctor fitted is a great way to turn back the clock and restore the guitar to it's original playing condition - which is exactly what I did to this customers Tanglewood. The bridge is back to where it should be and she's playing great.

If you have an acoustic that you feel could benefit from the same, message for details.

Over time, string tension can pull on the body of an acoustic guitar, changing the angle of the saddle; this can result in impossibly high playing action and other issues.

Having a bridge doctor installed is a great way to turn back the clock and bring the guitar back to its original playing state, which is exactly what I did with this customer's countryman acoustic. Plays great now.

I really wish I'd remembered to take more pictures of this one along the way!! This Squier Jazz bass came to me in a very poor state. The (slightly warped) fretboard had been smashed off and glued back on with huge overhang along the top; the frets were all almost all pitted; the tone and volume pots were frozen due to rust; there was a hump in the neck towards the last frets due to a poorly made shim; all the hardware and screws were rusty and it was pretty grimey to boot!

Very happy with how it turned out though and more importantly, so is the customer!

Tim Burden, look after her this time!!

Please do not shim your guitar necks this way!! I found this crude, sandpaper shim in a mustang bass today - no wonder it wasn't playing well. An uneven half shim like this can cause a hump in the fingerboard over time and you will loose tone and sustain due to poor neck contact with the body. Full pocket shims only please!

One loose wire is all it takes! And sometimes it happens with a brand new guitars. In this case, a new 70's vibe Squier Jazzmaster came with a loose solder joint at the volume pot, causing the whole lead circuit to intermittently cut in and out...very frustrating for the player. Fixed now and playing how it should.

It also needed a good setup and a little fret polish.
