The UK TPO Ban – What Nail Professionals Need to Know

There has been a lot of discussion about the upcoming TPO ban, so here's a clear overview of what it means for nail professionals in Great Britain.

What is TPO?

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a photoinitiator used in some UV and LED gel products. It enables the gel to cure and harden when exposed to a nail lamp.

Why is it being banned?

The UK has adopted legislation to prohibit TPO in cosmetic products because it has been classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant (CMR). Under UK Cosmetics Regulations, ingredients with this classification are prohibited unless a specific exemption is granted. No exemption has been granted for TPO.

It is important to note that this does not mean gel nail products are unsafe or that gel nails are being banned. The decision is based on the ingredient's regulatory hazard classification rather than evidence that properly manufactured and correctly used gel products are causing harm during normal salon use.

What happens next?

From 15 August 2026, manufacturers can no longer place new cosmetic products containing TPO on the Great Britain market.

From 14 February 2027, suppliers and distributors can no longer sell or supply cosmetic products containing TPO in Great Britain.

What should nail professionals do?

• Check whether your current gel systems contain TPO by reviewing the ingredient list or contacting your supplier.
• Begin transitioning to TPO-free products as your existing stock runs out.
• Purchase replacement products from reputable brands that have confirmed compliance with the new regulations.
• Stay informed through your manufacturers and industry bodies as reformulated products continue to become available.

The key takeaway is that this is a regulatory change, not a ban on gel nails. By planning ahead and switching to compliant products, nail professionals can continue to offer safe, high-quality services with minimal disruption.

You may find retention is different, application may need to be adjusted but most brands will have a good quality troubleshooting section for new products without TPO.
Good quality nail prep is going to be key more than ever, the new gels without TPO are going to be even less forgiving than previously.

I hope that helps please pop me a comment if youd like any more information on this subject 😊

Ive cropped out the name of the group and the person that posted this!

15 years this tech has been qualified!
And I can only assume shes not had anymore training since.

This blows my mind, not only has her client been extremely lucky over the last 10 years but now she has more problems than an allergic reaction.
This client is likely to now continue to have an allergic reaction to most gel products because she's had over exposure over many years, the nail tech has been mixing products which is a huge NO NO, each nail system is designed and manufactured to work together as a whole not to be mixed with different systems/different brands.

Because of this her insurance is now invalid, so if her client decides to take this further her insurance company would refuse to pay out and then any settlement comes directly out of pocket.

Proper education is key but also continued self development/further training is essential. This industry forever changes and unless you keep your training updated you will end up on the back foot of the industry and landing yourself in trouble.

Choose your techs wisely and choose your education providers even more wisely!

Let's talk flawless manicure 💅

Im talking close, clean, professional finish.

Have you ever walked away from a nail appointment and been disappointed? Not with the design but just the end result. Maybe they've been too bulky around the cuticle area, they look like they've already got a weeks growth or maybe your cuticles have just been shredded to s**t and are sore red and throbbing?

Have you been told oh you need to leave a gap to prevent allergies or premature lifting?

I cant do manicure like that without an efile?

Those nails have been photo shopped the cuticles NEVER look like that in real life!

These are just a few things ive heard clients have been told at least once whilst trying to find the right nail tech.

Now let me tell you most of that is utter bulls**t. Yep I said it. What they really mean is, im 2 lazy i cant be bothered or ive had s**t training and dont really have a clue what im doing.

Getting a clean, crisp, flawless finish isnt difficult, it requires, knowledge, practice and patience.

Do you need to be efile trained to create this look? the answer to that is a big fat NO!

In fact whilst it is extremely handy to be efile trained not only does basic efile training not cover deep Russian manicures but also not every single client will have the correct nail anatomy to even be able to do a deep Russian manicure on. Does this mean they should go away with a mediocre set of nails with a growth line further back than your uncles hair line? I think not!

My cuticles below have not had one bit of efile on them, they've not been buffed, lifted to an inch of its life nor have I flooded the cuticles. Because actually that statement was true you don't want product touching the skin however you can absolutely get up close and personal to that cuticle.

Whilst I appreciate the beauty and skill of Russian manicure it is a misconception that, thats the only way to achieve that look.

So tell me what's something you've been told by a nail tech? Let's see whose talking s**t and who is actually talking facts.

I'll be putting on a free keeping it clean master class because a qualified nail tech needs to give their clients the finish they deserve!
