The UK TPO Ban – What Nail Professionals Need to Know
There has been a lot of discussion about the upcoming TPO ban, so here's a clear overview of what it means for nail professionals in Great Britain.
What is TPO?
TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a photoinitiator used in some UV and LED gel products. It enables the gel to cure and harden when exposed to a nail lamp.
Why is it being banned?
The UK has adopted legislation to prohibit TPO in cosmetic products because it has been classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant (CMR). Under UK Cosmetics Regulations, ingredients with this classification are prohibited unless a specific exemption is granted. No exemption has been granted for TPO.
It is important to note that this does not mean gel nail products are unsafe or that gel nails are being banned. The decision is based on the ingredient's regulatory hazard classification rather than evidence that properly manufactured and correctly used gel products are causing harm during normal salon use.
What happens next?
From 15 August 2026, manufacturers can no longer place new cosmetic products containing TPO on the Great Britain market.
From 14 February 2027, suppliers and distributors can no longer sell or supply cosmetic products containing TPO in Great Britain.
What should nail professionals do?
• Check whether your current gel systems contain TPO by reviewing the ingredient list or contacting your supplier.
• Begin transitioning to TPO-free products as your existing stock runs out.
• Purchase replacement products from reputable brands that have confirmed compliance with the new regulations.
• Stay informed through your manufacturers and industry bodies as reformulated products continue to become available.
The key takeaway is that this is a regulatory change, not a ban on gel nails. By planning ahead and switching to compliant products, nail professionals can continue to offer safe, high-quality services with minimal disruption.
You may find retention is different, application may need to be adjusted but most brands will have a good quality troubleshooting section for new products without TPO.
Good quality nail prep is going to be key more than ever, the new gels without TPO are going to be even less forgiving than previously.
I hope that helps please pop me a comment if youd like any more information on this subject 😊
