Coming Soon…
A fun little mixed-bag of books coming soon this week with a couple from Marvel and then some darker creator owned titles. Let’s take a look…
First up we have Doom All-On-One an upcoming one-shot written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccio. Once a year on Midsummer Eve, when the walls between worlds are thin, Doctor Doom travels to Hell to challenge Mephisto for his mother's soul. This one-off special follows Doom as he takes on the entire Marvel Universe across the flames of perdition. The thing that makes this one a bit different is that the entire 50-page comic is told using wide-screen, landscape-oriented splash pages. Doom’s profile is super-high this year and this looks like a fun addition to all the Doom stories out there right now.
Next up we have Wolverine Paradise a five-issue limited series written and illustrated by Dan Panosian. Set directly in the aftermath of the iconic Dark Phoenix Saga, the story finds Logan dealing with intense angst, regret, and his own internal feral nature. Seeking to temporarily escape his duties and step away from the X-Men, Logan heads down to the sun-soaked streets of Miami for a much-needed vacation. Cue lots of crime, violence, a brand new supervillain, Wolvie on a motorbike and…Dazzler?! This one looks like a lot of fun!
Some exciting looking creator owned books now.
First up the weird and wonderfully titled 12-Foot Skeleton! This mini series is co-written by Tim Seeley and Aaron Campbell, with beautifully eerie artwork by Ben Templesmith. The creative team are pitching it as a nostalgic blend featuring the heart of a classic Steven Spielberg film colliding with the brutal thrill of an '80s slasher movie. The plot follows two 12-year-old neighborhood misfits, Lola and Jimmy, who are forced to fight for survival on Halloween night when a 12-foot-tall plastic lawn skeleton goes on a murderous rampage through their suburb. I mean, how can you not be sold by that premise?!
Next up is Leaded Gasoline, a grindhouse horror series created by writer Patrick Kindlon and artist Lorenzo Re. The story takes place in 1980s South Los Angeles during a wave of terror inspired by the real-life "Southside Slayer" murders. The story follows a community college professor and single father who believes the extreme violence has an environmental root cause rather than stemming from a single madman. Blending reality and fiction to tell its story this looks like it could be really interesting.
And finally we have You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive a brand new horror series from IDW under their IDW Dark imprint, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with art by Heather Vaughan. The story concerns a young member of a secluded, elite community who has never questioned the sheltered, perfect life built by her parents. When one of her best friends dies she starts investigating her surroundings and discovers hidden rooms, multi-generational secrets, and a grim truth: their safe haven is actually a lethal cage meant to consume them.
